As you may, or may not know, I am an Insomniac, that suffers with recurring extreme Night Terrors my ENTIRE life. I am 54. For longer than I can remember I have been in hellacious sleep, when and if I fall asleep.
I remember being in my early 20s and experimenting ลตith drugs for the first time. Talk about an honest confession here. I literally did them (pot, cocaine, and ice), just to sleep and then, to not dream. I suppose that is many of the reasons why I never got hooked.
Yeah, I was super successful in life, but the seemingly more successful I became, the harder I worked, the more successful I became. The worse my health became. I had migraines (hospital time), epileptic seizures (hospital time), horrific GERD (hospital time), acute insomnia and Night Terrors (endless doctors and sometimes hospital times.
This magnified the dreams to a whole new level. Still the same places, but now a more evolved storyline. The horror and such destruction, and so much more I would see. Between that and work, I suffered a mental breakdown. Not just once, but twice. The second one damn near killed me. My spirit wasn't broken, but I had reached a point where I would wake up more exhausted than if I had ran 5 miles. My constant working, and need to be the best, made my OCD and self competitiveness go into hyperdrive.
By the time I was 20, I was teaching at various colleges, high schools, businesses, and organizations. Including my very own high school. I had a salon and crew with 35 people. I was an award winning makeup artist. I worked out in the gym 7 days a week 2x a day, 5 days a week at 3am with a trainer. Oh, and saw my psychiatrist 5 days a week. I had already had my first full blown migraine and was hospitalized at 19. I was a machine. I was managing models, modeling, acting, singing, dancing, teaching self improvement like Tony Robbins style. Looking back they probably would have called me a life coach and instructor.
Realizing something had to change. Or I was going to work myself into the grave. I changed everything. That time period is for another blog post.
But it brings me to me and sleep. I have to force myself to sleep even now. Historically, even under anesthesia my brain and body won't stop. It has been know to freak medical teams out, my exes, and even my husband.
Why? I sleep walk, talk and have full conversations in my sleep. Fully function as if I'm awake. Thus, it is very very hard to put me under, let alone keep me asleep longer than a "cat nap". Oh, and my body temperature goes through the roof. Meanwhile, my blood pressure drops. So I have grown accustomed to "cat napping".
Now let's talk allergies.
I have wicked allergies. So much so, my allergies if I can't get them under control, can, and have had my allergies turn into Bronchitis, and/or Pneumonia. Meanwhile, I lack the ability to catch anything contagious. Never even had a cold, chicken pox, measles, mono, nothing. I get migraines, Pneumonia, Bronchitis, Ulcers, GERD, dangerously low blood pressure (think 70/60), Plaque Psoriasis, Psoriasis, Dermatitis, Fibroids, broken bones, and such. Oh yeah. All of which is debilitating. But I was born like this.
Imagine my surprise this past week when I learned about some new products on the market. Let's start here:
So every night it is a "fight for your right" (ode to Beastie Boys song I love) to score a piece of our bed! Between the Mr. at 6'2", me at 5'5", Hercules at 5'6" stretched out and 120lbs and Harley at 4' 5" stretched out and 65+lbs. Yep, it is a serious negotiation for bed and covers, that of course we wouldn't trade for anything. However…
I heard about this the other day.
An emperor mattress is typically 7 feet (210 cm) long and 7 feet (210 cm) wide, but the size can vary depending on the manufacturer and design. Some retailers make emperor beds that are 84 inches (215 cm) by 84 inches (215 cm), which is the same size as a Wyoming King mattress. Other manufacturers make a slightly smaller version that is 6 feet 6 inches (200 cm) by 6 feet 6 inches (200 cm).
Now, let's break it down!
Yep, a "Texan King" (80×98) is looking better every day. We'll just move our bed to another room (that's my thought cycle)! Or …
If we had the space in this house, the Alaskan King, at 108x108! The Alaskan king mattress is larger than a Wyoming king mattress. The Alaskan king mattress is 108 inches wide by 108 inches long, while the Wyoming king mattress is 80 inches wide by 94 inches long. The Alaskan king mattress is often made to order and is best for families with multiple children and pets. Of course the numbers aren't exact, depends on manufacturer. But pretty close.
So have these mattresses (there is a difference between the Emperor and the Wyoming just depends on manufacturer)…
Californian King (72×84)
Emperor King (84x84)
Wyoming King (80×90)
Texan King (80×98)
Alaskan King (108×108)
The best part is these beds are so popular now, sheets galore! Even frames. Amen to that!
I see you now ๐ ๐๐ coming from a girl that probably wouldn't know what to do with real 6-8 hours deep sleep.
Here are just a few screenshots I took on Amazon and Google about these sheets and the beds.
This is a serious game changer for me. I think it is so important to share our stories. By doing this, we can come with solutions. I literally have been in bed for the past almost 2 weeks because I couldn't breathe. Endless hard sneezing to the point my ribs and back hurt. So, I am totally open to trying new technology. Between allergies, menopause, night terrors, some day I feel like I have been in the boxing ring.
I have tried every homeopathic over the counter, and even prescribed pills out there to ccompact or at least manage my issues. For 54 years. Did I tell ya I have to take anti nausea meds to counter the other meds because of GERD. VICIOUS I say, absolutely ๐ฏ vicious!!!!
So, I am all over these sheets ASAP, STAT. The mattress...once the floors and yard are done. I will be keeping an eye out for the deals. I'll make sure to keep you all posted.
Let me know if what you think of this piece. I hope it helps someone out there.
