I created this based on a very out-of-focus photo of old falling apart fishing buoys found hanging off a somewhat ancient, yet still functional fishing shed.
This type of fishing shed can be found all over Nova Scotia, obviously in areas or communities where fishing(lobster, scallops, etc) occurs.
Many of these fishing sheds, while still usable have certainly seen better days. With the operating costs to fish being extremely high, putting a coat of paint or some minor upkeep could very well be far down the list of items to put cash out for.
Nevertheless, these fishing sheds certainly form part of the culture and tradition of many Nova Scotia coastal families and communities.
I wanted to try and convey a sense that at one point in the distant past, the shed may have been a reddish colour. Perhaps built and then painted with some red marine paint that may have been lying around. But, over the years the red paint has peeled and faded. After years of exposure to wind, rain, and salt air, it has become a sad grey with splashes of green from the years of mold and mildew growth.
Both Lynn and I really like how it turned out. We think this one will head to our local bistro to potentially hang in the restaurant and be for sale.
