This was something I've been thinking about doing for some time now but honestly felt overwhelmed on where to even start! Luckily once I had my plan in place this process became one of the most exciting things that I've made so far. I created the structure by measuring and cutting out carboard to the size that I wanted the house, then I rolled out slabs of clay and cut out the walls. After that I started building! In a lot of ways this part reminded me of making a gingerbread house, except the walls of wet clay weren't very good at holding themselves up. Next I went through and enforced all of the walls to ensure that they would be able to hold their own as it dries and goes through the kiln firings. This part was the most stressful and challenging part of the process. After this I was able to start on the fun but tedious process of adding the siding texture along with the windows, door and other little details. I wanted to make the siding look old and worn as if the house has been in the forest for a long time and the weather had taken it's toll. To do this I used a metal rib and just carved into the walls I created. This took a couple of hours, while I worked I watched a show on my phone and really enjoyed the process. This part required much less thinking and problem solving than the first. I found it so fun to decorate the outside of the house and I knew from the beginning I wanted to add an eye at the top! Lastly I added on the roof and carved the shingles into that. This was my favorite part and I'm really happy with how it all came out. As for now the hut is drying and awaiting its first trip to be bisque fired in the kiln. I still have a lengthy process to go before the completed project. Next I will be creating the chicken feet that the hut will sit on. After that I'll get to glaze everything before one last kiln firing and then I can put it all together. I'm exciting to keep sharing the progress as I continue to work on it. | | | |
