As the 2024 NFL Draft nears, excitement builds with speculation around top picks. Caleb Williams is a strong contender to be selected first, whether it's by the Chicago Bears or another team that trades with them. The focus shifts to who will go second, sparking debates as the Washington Commanders currently hold the No. 2 pick. Will they prioritize talent or fill a specific gap? Let's delve into the potential options.

Drake Maye, QB

In the quest for a franchise quarterback, the Washington Commanders may set their sights on Drake Maye from the North Carolina Tar Heels. As a commanding presence in the pocket with his 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame, Maye embodies the prototype of an NFL quarterback.

His arm strength is exceptional, enabling him to make all the requisite throws with a touch of flair, while his mobility adds an extra dimension to his game. Despite concerns about his consistency and decision-making, Maye's raw potential and high ceiling are tantalizing.

The Commanders, equipped with ample cap space, could find in Maye the cornerstone to build around, particularly in an era devoid of an edge-rushing talent worthy of such an early pick. Assuming Caleb Williams is off the board, Maye emerges as a formidable option for Washington, promising to rejuvenate their offense with his substantial talent.

Jayden Daniels, QB

Jayden Daniels, emerging from an electrifying 2023 season with LSU, presents himself as a prime candidate to be the second QB taken in the draft. His Heisman-worthy performance, boasting 3,812 passing yards combined with an astounding 40 touchdowns, juxtaposed against a mere four interceptions, sets him apart.

On the ground, Daniels dominated with 1,134 rushing yards and an additional 10 scores. He etched his name in history as the first to exceed 300 passing and 200 rushing yards in a single game. Daniels' mobility, accuracy on the move, and formidable arm strength raise his profile, yet there remains a lingering question about how his playmaking ability will transition into a more pocket-focused pro game.

Caleb Williams, QB

Despite being the frontrunner for the first overall pick, a twist of fate could see Caleb Williams fall to the second selection. With top-tier arm strength, elite athleticism, and a playmaking prowess that's been described as generational, Williams checks all the boxes of a franchise quarterback.

The possibility of him not wanting to play for the Bears has sparked rumors that could lead to his availability at the No. 2 spot. The Bears could also choose to keep Fields and use the No. 1 pick on another player, like Marvin Harrison Jr. A Washington native, Williams has a history with Commanders' offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury from their USC days, which bodes well for chemistry. If by chance he's there at No. 2, anticipate an immediate, almost reflexive, selection by the Commanders.

Marvin Harrison Jr., WR

While quarterbacks dominate early draft discussions, Marvin Harrison Jr. emerges as the wideout with the best chance to break this trend. Compared to Calvin Johnson, who went No. 2 in 2007, Harrison possesses rare attributes—the stature of an imposing target man at 6-foot-4 and the exceptional hand-eye coordination to secure contested catches.

The most likely scenario for Harrison Jr. going second is if the Bears are content with Justin Fields and trade their No. 1 pick to the Commanders, who would likely select Williams. The Bears would then pick at No. 2 and almost certainly take Harrison Jr., giving Fields another dynamic weapon to go alongside D.J. Moore.  The Commanders could also trade back with a team like Arizona, who is also rumored to want Harrison Jr. at No. 4.

Final Thoughts

As Draft Day approaches, the Washington Commanders' decision remains under intense scrutiny. Each prospect brings a unique skill set that could reshape the team's future. With strategic considerations at play, the second pick will not just be a talent choice but a defining moment for the franchise's trajectory. Will they stay at No. 2 or perhaps try and trade with the Bears and acquire the top pick?

For fantasy football players, the selection holds equal weight. A rookie QB taken at No. 2 could be a game-changer for your team, while a top wide receiver can help elevate your receiving corps. Make sure to check the NFL daily fantasy odds and stay updated on the latest draft news as you plan your fantasy football strategy. The second pick may ultimately depend on factors beyond talent, but one thing is for sure – the selection will set the tone for an exciting new season in the NFL.
