CHESAPEAKE BEACH, MD – A fatal crash occurred on February 7, 2024, at approximately 6:58 p.m., in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, resulting in the death of a local man and leaving a woman critically injured. The Calvert County Sheriff's Patrol Bureau and Crash Reconstruction Unit were dispatched to the scene at Maryland Route 261 (Bayside Road) and 13th Street following reports of a severe motor vehicle accident.
The initial investigation into the incident disclosed that a 2017 Range Rover, heading north on Maryland Route 261 and nearing the intersection with 13th Street, collided with a tree as it toppled toward the road. The impact was severe, with the tree penetrating the vehicle's passenger compartment. Subsequently, the Range Rover veered off the road, hitting a guardrail before colliding with another tree.
Gerald A. Robertson, 59, from Chesapeake Beach, identified as the driver of the Range Rover, was urgently transported to CalvertHealth Medical Center. Despite efforts to save him, Robertson succumbed to his injuries sustained in the crash. An unidentified female passenger, also involved in the accident, was airlifted in critical condition to a nearby trauma center by Trooper 2.
The crash has sparked an investigation led by Master Deputy Jeffrey Hardesty of the Crash Reconstruction Team. The circumstances leading up to the tragic event, including the sudden fall of the tree onto the roadway, are under scrutiny.
