LANCASTER, Pa. – In a closely contested match that saw the lead change hands multiple times, St. Mary's College of Maryland's men's basketball team suffered a narrow defeat against Lancaster Bible College on Tuesday night, ending their two-game winning streak. Despite Daryn Alexander and Micah Henry scoring over 20 points each and the team posting a season-high 95 points, it wasn't enough to secure victory, resulting in a 100-95 loss to Lancaster Bible College.
The game was characterized by its competitive nature, with four tied scores and three lead changes in the first half alone. St. Mary's College, showing remarkable accuracy, shot 76.9 percent from the field in the first half, including a commendable 4-of-5 from three-point range. This shooting prowess allowed them to build up to a 14-point lead, the largest in the game, with Alexander and Henry playing pivotal roles in this surge.
However, Lancaster Bible College mounted a strong comeback in the second half, improving their shooting percentage significantly and outscoring St. Mary's College 56-40. The home team's persistence paid off when they took the lead for the first time since the game's early minutes, following a pair of free throws by Grant Sareyka, setting the stage for a thrilling final stretch.
The Chargers capitalized on turnovers, scoring 27 points off St. Mary's College's 20 turnovers, contributing significantly to the game's outcome. Despite the loss, St. Mary's College posted impressive shooting statistics, finishing the game with 63.5-percent accuracy from the field and 60-percent from beyond the arc, both season highs.
Notable performances included Alexander's team-best 27 points and Henry's 22 points. Sophomore forward Jake Koverman and senior captain Hollique Johnson also made significant contributions, with Koverman adding 15 points and Johnson chipping in 10.
On the Lancaster Bible side, Connor Storr stood out with a double-double, scoring a game-high 33 points and grabbing ten rebounds, while Sareyka contributed 30 points to their victory.
The loss moves St. Mary's College to an 11-10 overall record and 6-2 in the United East Conference, while Lancaster Bible College improves to 13-9 overall and 7-2 in conference play. St. Mary's College looks to bounce back in their next game against Penn State Berks on February 3, which will also serve as Senior Day, Alumni Day, and the Gold Rush Game at MPOARC Arena in St. Mary's City, Md.
