Over winter break while on a mini trip downtown with my family, I spent some time photographing the Philadelphia skyline and people through some dense fog and had a lot of fun shooting. I'm hoping to do some more street photography this semester in Scranton, and in particular some in Philly over the summer when I'm home. As I've gotten more and more comfortable with my camera settings and shooting manual I've been able to better capture night scenes and preserve detail in darker scenes and am very proud of the work I've produced as of late, which for anyone who knows me will know, that's a pretty big milestone.
As I'm starting my color photography class with professor Sue Jenkins here at Marywood (Art 318A), I'm really trying to push my use of color and experiment with different color palettes. In a lot of my work I do for clients or the school paper, I have to stay true to the real color of whatever it is I am photographing, but in my personal work I greatly enjoy playing with color and drastically changing it from the original image.
During my mini three hour trip downtown I explored photographically some streets and buildings that I have walked in and past countless times in my life, but never stopped to really examine and appreciate. Growing up just outside of the city I visit quite often, seeing either family or going to various events, but I always feel kind of rushed and don't want to stop to take real images that go further than your typical 'snapshot'. Lately though I've been trying to slow down and take in more of my surroundings and not worry about quickly 'grabbing the shot' but rather intentionally creating images. This has drastically helped my street photography as I've felt much more comfortable waiting for the right moment to happen rather than moving on to find it somewhere else.
Combining techniques and editing concepts has also greatly helped me create more intriguing images, and I think I've officially entered my light painting phase.
These shots in particular I had a lot of fun editing, as it's quite different from my typical style. I also like the idea of combining yellow with such dark shades, as I normally associate yellow with sunshine, happy scenes, etc, so it's interesting seeing so much yellow in a more dark and moody image.
