In a series of concerning events across Charles County schools, authorities have been on high alert due to threats, possession of weapons, and altercations involving students. These incidents, occurring at the start of 2024, have prompted investigations and interventions by School Resource Officers (SROs) to ensure the safety and security of students and staff.
At Piccowaxen Middle School, on January 30th, a student alarmingly claimed to have placed explosives around the premises, leading to an immediate investigation by the SRO and a thorough search of the school. Fortunately, no explosives were found, and disciplinary actions are being considered for the student involved. Authorities encourage anyone with information to contact Cpl. Caballero at 301-609-3282 ext. 0573 as the investigation continues.
The same day, Thomas Stone High School was the scene of an altercation involving six individuals and two confirmed students. The fight led to a swift response from the SRO, who is collaborating with the Charles County Public Schools Director of School Safety and Security to ascertain the school status of the other suspects. Criminal charges and disciplinary actions are being prepared, with some suspects already identified. PFC Payne at 301-609-3282 ext. 0452 is handling inquiries related to this incident.
In another incident at Barnhart Elementary School on January 3rd, a student was found in possession of a butterfly knife, claiming it was found and brought to school to show friends. Due to the student's age, criminal charges will not be pursued, but school disciplinary measures are being applied.
Further, another threat of violence at Piccowaxen Middle School was reported on January 31st. A student made a violent threat during lunch, leading to an investigation by the SRO, who contacted the student's parents and conducted a home visit. While criminal charges will not be filed, the student will face disciplinary consequences.
At John Hanson Middle School, two students were caught with vape pens containing possible THC on January 31st. The students received juvenile civil citations, were released to their parents, and faced school disciplinary actions. The community is urged to discuss the risks of using substances with unknown contents with their children.
A significant breakthrough in a criminal investigation unrelated to the school incidents was also reported. A juvenile suspect has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a convenience store on December 28, 2023. The 17-year-old male suspect from Temple Hills was charged as an adult with armed robbery, first-degree assault, and other related charges. Evidence recovered during a search warrant linked him to the robbery, and he is currently being held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center. Detective Baxley at 301-609-6508 is the contact for any information related to this case.
These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges and the critical role of SROs and law enforcement in maintaining safe learning environments. The Charles County Public Schools and police department are actively working to address and prevent such occurrences, ensuring the well-being of all students and staff.
