The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has officially opened the application window for a new grant program designed to combat the spread of invasive fish species in state waters. With a focus on removing blue catfish and Northern snakeheads, the program offers financial support of up to $5,000 for initiatives that aim to mitigate the environmental impact of these non-native species. The application submission deadline is April 15, 2024, with successful applicants to be announced in early May.

Branson Williams, the invasive fishes program manager at Maryland DNR, emphasized the urgency of the initiative, stating, "It's imperative to remove more blue catfish and Northern snakeheads from Maryland waters to protect our ecosystem." He further highlighted the program's goal to extract these invasive species from water bodies and explore and implement constructive uses for the fish removed.
The invasive presence of blue catfish and Northern snakehead in Maryland poses a significant threat to the region's biodiversity, particularly affecting native species crucial to ecological balance and local economies. The grant program seeks to empower community-based projects and individuals with innovative solutions for invasive fish removal and utilization, ensuring that the efforts have a sustainable and positive impact on the local ecosystem.
Applicants interested in contributing to the state's invasive species control efforts can submit their proposals online via the DNR's proposal solicitation form. The program allows for projects to commence on July 1, 2024, and offers flexibility in project duration, accommodating single and multi-day initiatives. All projects must conclude by June 30, 2025, and will be conducted under the supervision of the DNR to ensure effectiveness and compliance with departmental goals.
The DNR has made resources and information regarding invasive fish species available on its website, providing valuable insights for applicants looking to develop impactful project proposals. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact Branson Williams directly at branson.williams@maryland.gov for additional inquiries or further details about the grant program.
This grant initiative represents a critical step in Maryland's ongoing efforts to preserve its natural aquatic environments. By supporting innovative and effective strategies for invasive species control, the Maryland DNR aims to safeguard the health and diversity of the state's waterways for future generations.
