We took apart the set of "Baltimore Docket" on Sunday and packed it away with the help of the carpenter who built it (Gary Flowers) and the man who turned it into a work of art (Christopher Winslow). I have a feeling we will revive this play about trials I have covered over the years for The Sun. Same with "Baltimore, You Have No Idea." The tentative plan is to revive that "one-man play with a cast of seven" in December, but with some new material. We will let you know about that in the coming months.
These plays — and the reception to them — have been a dream come true for me. I had in mind playwriting for many years, just didn't get around to it. (I had a few other things going on.) Now that we've had three successful runs, I can say what Alan Swan (played by Peter O'Toole) says in "My Favorite Year," my favorite movie: "This is the most fun and the hardest work I've done since the world was young."
Allow me a paragraph to give thanks for: Cast members, old friends and new, who bought into these projects and gave it their all; Mat Lane, such a gifted composer and musician I've known since he was a teenager; Will Schwarz, director and video producer and a treasured confidant; Natasha Tylea, the hard-working tech magician at the Baltimore Museum of Art; Todd Douglas of Bold Yellow, a great and powerful webmaster, graphic designer and marketing man; my daughter Julia, who runs guest services; my employer, The Baltimore Sun, for supporting these dramatizations of my columns; great audiences full of people who care about Baltimore and want to hear stories about it. Thank you all.
