Joint pain and arthritis can significantly impact your quality of life, making even simple tasks difficult and uncomfortable. While there are various treatment options available, many people turn to supplements to help alleviate joint pain and promote overall joint health. This comprehensive guide will explore the most popular joint supplements, their benefits, potential risks, and how they can support joint health.
Understanding Joint Pain and Arthritis
Arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis, is the most common cause of joint pain. It affects millions of individuals worldwide and can lead to stiffness, inflammation, and limited mobility. To effectively manage joint pain, it is crucial to understand the underlying causes and mechanisms of arthritis.
What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a chronic condition characterized by inflammation of the joints. It can occur in various forms, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent type and is caused by the breakdown of cartilage, the protective tissue that cushions the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis, on the other hand, is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and joint damage.
What's Special About Knee Osteoarthritis Supplements?
It's not so much that there should be a lot of differences in which dietary supplements for arthritis are going to be best for knee pain or which are going to be best for hand pain, etc. It's more a case of most of the research being done on knee pain-related symptoms. This means that we have very accurate trials to look at when assessing what supplements for arthritis should help with your knees. There are potentially some arguments around dosage and region, but as knees would require more significant amounts, if it's good for arthritis pain in your knees, it will be good for arthritis pain in general.
Causes and Risk Factors
Several factors contribute to the development of arthritis. Age is a well-known cause of arthritis, along with genetics, increased pressure on joints caused by obesity, previous joint injuries, and repetitive joint movements associated with certain occupations, all factors increasing the risk of joint health issues. Additionally, inflammation, oxidative stress, and an imbalance in the immune system can also contribute to the onset and progression of arthritis.
The Role of Supplements in Joint Health
Supplements can be valuable in supporting joint health and relieving arthritis symptoms. They often contain key ingredients that target inflammation, promote cartilage health, and provide essential nutrients for overall joint function. Explore some of the most popular joint supplements and their potential benefits.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin
Glucosamine and chondroitin are two widely recognized supplements for joint health. Glucosamine sulfate is a natural compound in cartilage that helps maintain its structure and function. Chondroitin, on the other hand, promotes water retention and elasticity in cartilage. Together, they can potentially alleviate joint pain, improve mobility, and slow down the progression of osteoarthritis.
While research on glucosamine and chondroitin has produced mixed results, most studies suggest that glucosamine supplements may effectively reduce arthritis symptoms. It is important to note that the efficacy of these supplements can vary depending on the formulation, dosage, and individual response.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in fish oil supplements, have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. These essential fats can help reduce joint pain, stiffness, and swelling associated with arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis. Research suggests that omega-3s may protect against heart disease and improve cognitive function. There's no doubt over whether or not omega is good for joint stiffness, with pretty much every organization, from the arthritis foundation to most medical associations, recommending them. This makes them undeniably one of the best joint supplements ingredients.
Including omega-3-rich foods, such as fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, can also provide these beneficial fats. However, supplementation can be a convenient and practical option for those who do not consume enough omega-3s.
Turmeric and Curcumin
Turmeric, a vibrant yellow spice commonly used in Indian cuisine, contains curcumin. Curcumin has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it a popular supplement for joint health. Research suggests that curcumin may help alleviate joint pain, reduce inflammation, and slow down the progression of osteoarthritis.
While turmeric can be incorporated into your diet, curcumin supplements provide a more concentrated dose. Choosing high-quality supplements with standardized curcumin content is essential for optimal effectiveness.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is not only crucial for bone health but also plays a role in regulating inflammation. Research indicates that vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of developing certain types of arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis. Supplementing with vitamin D can help maintain adequate levels in the body, potentially reducing arthritis symptoms and supporting overall joint health.
Vitamin D supplementation is a supplement that should not be used at excessive levels without the guidance of a healthcare professional, as excessive intake can have adverse effects. Regular monitoring of vitamin D levels is essential to ensure optimal dosing.
Other Promising Supplements
Several other supplements have shown promise in promoting joint health and relieving arthritis symptoms. These include SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine), which has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties; Boswellia, a herb that can reduce inflammation and alleviate joint pain; and MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), a sulfur compound that may help reduce joint stiffness and improve mobility.

FlexAgain
Nutra FA, the manufacturer of FlexAgain, has gained a fantastic reputation for providing effective and safe health supplements over several years.
FlexAgain is one of Nutra FA's leading products designed for Knee and Joint pain. To achieve this, Nutra FA has taken the latest proven scientific research and current medical data to blend a potent supplement that uses premium ingredients and has been dosed correctly based on recommendations and research from Arthritis foundations worldwide.
One of the biggest problems currently within the supplement market is that many health supplements either have minimal ingredients or, worse still, are underdosed or hide behind the term "Preparatory Blend." This is how many manufacturers hide what they are using within their products, which is often a way of cutting costs.
With FlexAgain, every ingredient is listed on the label with the exact quantities of each ingredient, giving this supplement total transparency. What is impressive is that there are no less than eleven highly researched potent ingredients within each capsule. By using a mixture of these ingredients, the manufacturers are not just targeting one aspect of joint pains. Still, Nutra FA should hopefully target numerous knee and joint issues using various ingredients.
Unfortunately, there is no one magic ingredient that works the first time every time; however, by using a broad spectrum of proven ingredients, the manufacturers of FlexAgain give you the best chance of success.

Customer Reviews
On all the websites looked at, from Amazon, Reddit, Trustpilot, independent review sites, and their website, this product achieves more 5-star ratings than any other joint supplement.
My Review
Having tried numerous joint supplements and having spent the time to study the complicities of Knee and Joint pain by looking at the recommendations from arthritis societies and the latest scientific and medical data, I believe that I have finally found a Joint supplement that works. I love walking, and I suffer from both knee and ankle pain. While I am using FlexAgain, I only suffer from the occasional discomfort, especially when it is cold; however, compared to other ineffective supplements, the alternative or not using this supplement does not bear thinking about.
For this reason, I have awarded this supplement my overall Knee and Joint Health Product for 2024 and 2024.
Joint Buddy
So, Joint Buddy has the best glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate of any listed supplements. Still, beyond that, it's also the most comprehensive regarding vitamins and minerals that have been shown to contribute to joint health and reduce osteoarthritis pain. They also have a money-back guarantee, which, once again, we verified with our mystery shoppers. We could also credit them as the best glucosamine supplements.
Joint Buddy Glucosamine Supplements Ingredients
Of course, we mentioned 1500mg of glucosamine sulfate and 500mg of chondroitin sulfate, which is a good start. Then we have Vitamin A (45mcg), Vitamin C (1.5mg), and Vitamin E (1mg) are crucial for joint health. A deficiency in vitamin A can cause joint pain and harm bones and connective tissues. Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, fights inflammation and supports cartilage. Similarly, vitamin E possesses anti-inflammatory properties and aids in maintaining cartilage health.
B Vitamins are essential to prevent joint pain and maintain overall joint well-being. Deficiencies in B vitamins can exacerbate joint discomfort, making them vital components in Joint Buddy.
On the other hand, Zinc (0.3mg) and Selenium (30mcg) collaborate to enhance joint health by reducing inflammation, repairing cartilage, and protecting joints from oxidative stress. Their combination in Joint Buddy ensures effective absorption, even at its relatively low dosage.
While included, copper (0.15mg) may not be essential for everyone unless they have a diagnosed copper deficiency. Then there's Manganese (1mg), which promotes robust bones when combined with calcium and vitamin D. This is particularly crucial for older adults, who are more susceptible to osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. To add even more things to Joint Buddy, Cetyl Myristoleate (1.5mg) is a natural omega-5 fatty acid with potential support for joint health. Although low in dosage, Devil's Claw (1.5mg) offers potential benefits in reducing inflammation and pain. Boron (1.5mg) strengthens bones and enhances joint supplements. L-histidine (15mg) may aid in reducing joint inflammation and pain, but more research is needed for complete clarity. Green-lipped mussel (100mg) has mild anti-inflammatory and pain-reducing effects and beneficial omega-3 fatty acids for joint health.
Customer Reviews
Customer reviews, while relatively few, are all excellent regarding Joint Buddy's ability to relieve pain. We didn't find a single negative review, which isn't surprising due to the refund policy, as people aren't too likely to complain if they've been refunded.
My Experience
Joint Buddy was excellent as an affordable joint supplement. While it didn't work as well as FlexAgain, Joint Buddy delivered exceptional value for its affordable price. I noticed it improved arthritis pain, but as mentioned, not quite as much as FlexAgain. If I added an omega supplement to the mix, I don't think it was a huge difference. However, at that point, it isn't a great deal cheaper as an option. But, if you're budget-conscious or get enough omega through your diet naturally, it could be a good alternative.

Customer Reviews
Customer reviews are very mixed with this supplement; most customers who took the time to write a review said that the product contained enough turmeric to support their daily needs and used the correct dosing of curcuminoids to aid the absorption of the turmeric. While some customers on Amazon felt it did help with some of their aches and pains, many customers complained about the lack of transparency when looking at the ingredients (using a preparatory blend). Others said, " Don't waste your money."
My Review
Like many customers, I wouldn't say I like it when a company hides behind a preparatory blend; it doesn't matter how big the company is; there is no need for this lack of transparency today.
We are spending our hard-earned money, and we have the right to know if the ingredients in the blend are dosed to the correct, backed by the latest scientific research.
That aside, I tried this product, and I got some benefits from it; while the pain relief in my knees was marginal, it helped my ankles, which was appreciated.
I also had concerns surrounding the carbon footprint of importing Turmeric from Nicaragua and Indonesia and an agroforestry setting; this sets alarm bells ringing. However, this product is Vegan and gluten-free but does contain soy.
Osteo Bi-Flex
Osteo Bi-Flex is a joint health supplement produced by Rexall Sundown, Inc., a Boca Raton, Florida manufacturer. The company was founded in 1994 and has been an industry leader for over two decades. Osteo Bi-Flex has been responsible for leading the way in the joint care supplements category for more than 25 years.
Osteo Bi-Flex is designed to support joint health and flexibility, and it contains ingredients like glucosamine and Boswellia serrata extract. However, it's important to note that some aspects of the product, such as using proprietary blends and specific ingredients, have been criticized.
Osteo Bi-Flex Joint Health, Triple Strength Ingredients
- Glucosamine 1500mg: This is a natural compound found in cartilage, which cushions joints.
- Joint Shield™ 5-LOXIN Advanced® 100mg: This highly concentrated herbal extract helps improve joint comfort. It's a joint health ingredient that promotes joint comfort and joint health. There are no food sources of 5-LOXIN Advanced, so it must be obtained from supplements.
- Vitamin C 60mg: An essential vitamin that's important for many bodily functions, including the health of the skin, immune system, and bones.
- Manganese 2mg: A mineral essential for normal brain function and your bones and immune system's health.
- Chondroitin/MSM Complex 1103mg: This includes Chondroitin Sulfate, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Collagen (Hydrolyzed Gelatin), Boswellia Serrata (Resin), Boron (as Bororganic Glycine), and Hyaluronic Acid (all dosages unknown)
Customer Reviews
Once again, customer reviews are very mixed; one pleasing aspect noted in nearly all reviews is the amount of Glucosamine 1500mg; however, numerous studies show that this ingredient potentially overdoses as 500mg is considered the recommended dosage. The Joint Shield 5-Loxin Advanced is based on Boswellia serrata extract; Boswellia has been scientifically proven to help prevent cartilage damage and is dosed correctly. Unfortunately, while there are numerous positive reviews, these are undermined by some highly negative reviews. Many people complain about the product's effectiveness and the fact that a preparatory blend is required.
My Review
Unfortunately, I experienced limited positive effects when taking Osteo Bi-Flex, which is a little baffling considering the amount of Glucosamine included within the blend. Osteo Bi-Flex again uses a preparatory blend and, as with the Gaia product, is not ideal.
Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Xtra
Nordic Naturals was founded by Joar Opheim in 1995. The story of Nordic Naturals begins in Arctic Norway, where Joar Opheim grew up. When he moved to California to complete his MBA, he noticed that the pure omega-rich cod liver oil that Norwegians rely on to stay healthy was nowhere to be found.
Joar was determined to make a difference. With each trip home, he would fill an extra suitcase with bottles of his favorite fish oil to share with friends in the U.S. This deep desire to share the power of pure, fresh omega-3 nutrients inspired Joar to found Nordic Naturals.
The company set out to develop a manufacturing process offering high-quality nutrients that bring health benefits to as many as possible. Nordic Naturals began to change how Americans perceived fish oil, and they eventually got the wide-ranging benefits of omega-3s to a larger audience, including children, seniors, athletes, and even pets.
Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Xtra uses Omega 3 to aid knee and joint health. Omega 3 is one of the most well-known and well-backed, with considerable scientific evidence that supports the claims that this is one of the best anti-inflammatory supplements currently used by many joint supplement manufacturers.
Omega 3 has other benefits, helping your heart, brain, and more.
Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Xtra ingredients
Purified deep-sea fish oil (from anchovies and sardines), coating agent: gelatine (bovine; capsule); humectant: glycerol; water, natural lemon flavor, antioxidant: D-alpha-tocopherol; olive oil, cholecalciferol, antioxidant: rosemary extract.
Customer Reviews
Like RestAgain, this product has many positive reviews and has more than one million followers on Facebook, which speaks volumes for the company. Nordic Naturals has won multiple awards with this supplement and most recently won the Vitamin Retailer's Best Selling Essential Fatty Acid Supplement award. The only negative customer reviews are related to Upset stomachs, Diarrhea, and Nausea.
My Review
This, for me, would win my best runner-up award; although the product only uses one main ingredient, this is a quality product made with a premium ingredient. During my trial, I did feel the positive effects of this supplement, although it took a little longer for the ingredient to have a positive impact than with RestAgain by Nutra FA. The company claims to fish sustainably and produce (a Norwegian policy). This product is made with sardines and anchovies, which are more difficult to catch using sustainable methods such as lines and hooks. One thing is sure: they are not for vegans.
Kirkland Signature Extra Strength Vitamin D3 2000 I.U
- Kirkland Signature Extra Strength Vitamin D3 2000 I.U. Price: $14.99
Kirkland Signature is a private-label brand owned by Costco. Costco's original headquarters in Kirkland, Washington, inspired the name. The brand was created in 1995 to offer high-quality goods at a lower price.
Costco achieves this by controlling every element of the product's creation, including packaging and transportation2. This strategy allows Costco to rule out third-party distributors, making prices typically 20% lower than traditional retail.
The brand is committed to continuous improvement and constantly looks at Kirkland Signature items to improve them. This commitment to quality and value is reflected in the positive reviews of their products, such as the Kirkland Signature Extra Strength Vitamin D3 2000 I.U.
While Kirkland Signature Extra Strength Vitamin D3 2000 I.U. does not necessarily use ingredients associated primarily with knee and joint pains, what is recognized is the importance of vitamins within our body, and the effects vitamin deficiency can have in damaging our joints should not be underestimated.
Kirkland Signature Ingredients
Dicalcium Phosphate, Magnesium Oxide, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Ascorbic Acid, Ferrous Fumarate, and Gelatin. Contains 2% or less of beta-carotene, biotin, calcium silicate, carnauba wax, cholecalciferol, chromium picolinate, croscarmellose sodium, crospovidone, cupric sulfate, cyanocobalamin, D-calcium pantothenate, dl-alpha tocopheryl acetate, folic acid, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, lutein, lycopene, magnesium stearate, manganese sulfate, niacinamide.
Customer Reviews
Many customers found these an excellent source of Vitamins, and almost every review was positive. Unfortunately, no one said they helped with joint pain, just that they helped their overall well-being.
My Review
I chose Kirkland Signature Extra Strength Vitamin D3 2000 I.U as part of this trial to see if using a multi-vitamin approach to joint health would experience any benefits; the importance of vitamins in the body has been so well scientifically and medically researched it would be remiss of me not to see if using the multi-vitamin product would work.
Unfortunately, it had a negligible effect on my joint pain, which is what I expected; what I hadn't considered was the positive effect on my overall health. I felt my eyes were brighter in the morning and didn't experience as many early morning sniffles, especially during the winter. This is a decent option if I consider using a purely multi-vitamin supplement.
NutraJoint
NutraJoint, a brand known for its joint care tea, is Manufactured by NutraTea Ltd in the UK with offices in Italy. Nutra Joint Tea is aimed at preventing and helping with joint pain relief. What makes this tea bag slightly different from other tea joint supplements is that the manufacturers recommend that you use the tea bags up to three times over a day to ensure that any joint relief benefits can hopefully be sustained throughout the day.
NutraJoint Ingredients
- Curcumin (50%): This ingredient has been found in numerous scientific research that may help with reducing inflammation and may help people with Rheumatoid arthritis
- Green tea (30%): Green tea contains polyphenols and antioxidants, which may help reduce inflammation and slow the damage to cartilage within the joints. Some scientific studies have suggested that this blocks the molecules that can cause Rheumatoid arthritis.
- Piperine. It is potentially a potent anti-inflammatory known to help reduce inflammation; an additional benefit is that it helps and enhances the absorption of curcumin into the body to maximize the benefits.
Customer Reviews
Finding various sources of independent reviews online was limited, and purely looking at Amazon reviews is not always ideal. However, even from these limited reviews, what was clear is that the consensus was that the tea tasted nice and had a mixed response to the effectiveness of any pain relief benefits.
My Review
Unlike most of the people who reviewed this product, unfortunately, even after two weeks of trying, I didn't enjoy the flavor, and this has undoubtedly prevented me from seeing if the long-term benefits matched the claims of the manufacturer NutraTea Ltd. As for the short-term benefits, it was not as quick or as noticeable as some of the better premium products in this review. However, if you like green tea and want to add potential health benefits, maybe give NutraJoint a try; while it wasn't my cup of tea, we are all different.
LifeSeasons Mobili-T
- LifeSeasons Mobili-T Price $31.99
LifeSeasons is a private-owned company in Springville, Utah, established in 2009. The company develops, manufactures, and markets health supplements designed to support the body's changing nutritional needs through every phase of life. They identify specific health concerns and develop a potent combination of clinically tested ingredients.
Before I delve into the ingredients, I would like to point out that on the front of the bottle, it states, "Dietary supplement 120 VEG Capsules." This is very misleading; while the capsules may be veg, the ingredients are certainly not. One of the ingredients listed on the bottle is hydrolyzed chicken collagen, and secondly, on the label, it also contains traces of shellfish (crab and shrimp). Neither of these ingredients is suitable for vegetarians, and the label is very misleading.
Putting those issues aside, looking at the ingredients, there seems to be much to like.
LifeSeasons Mobili-T Ingredients
- Collagen 775mg: A structural protein that serves as the main building block for the cartilage.
- Glucosamine 1000mg: Stimulates the production of glycosaminoglycans, a key component of cartilage.
- MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) 500mg: Provides sulfur, a vital element for healthy cartilage, skin, hair, and nails.
- Chondroitin 100mg: Supports cartilage production and joint function and eases inflammation.
- Turmeric 100mg: Rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants to support normal inflammation response.
- Bromelain 50mg: Pain Relief: Research shows bromelain acts as a pain reliever that works similarly to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil (ibuprofen)
Customer Reviews
Once again, finding reliable sources of reviews was challenging; those on Amazon were mostly positive, and the same on iHerb; when you look at the blend within the capsule, all these ingredients have either been proven to help with joint pain or have properties that will relieve joint pain you would expect nothing less.
My Review
After getting over my confusion with the label, I hope that the manufacturer changes the label and, moving forward, clearly states "Not suitable for Vegetarians" and potentially warns customers that the product contains shellfish, as this may be important to customers who have shellfish allergies.
Puttin' that aside, the ingredients within this blend are excellent, and the company should be praised for this; all the ingredients are well-dosed with current scientific data.
So, did it work for me? To a point, I would have to say yes, not as well as FlexAgain or Nordic Naturals, but it helped.
FlexNow
FlexNow is a health supplement that contains SheaFlex70, which is extracted from the pit of the shea fruit. One of the concerns with using the Shea fruit nut would be an allergic reaction. However, current research suggests no confirmed reports of allergy to shea nut are known. In the US, shea nut is considered a tree nut and is a declarable food allergen, so it will always be explicitly named on food labels when present. In the UK, shea nuts are not considered one of the eight nuts in the 'tree nut' group according to EU legislation and are, therefore, not a 'top 14' allergen.
So, while it's always essential for individuals with known nut allergies to be cautious, the evidence suggests that shea nuts and shea nut products are unlikely to cause allergic reactions. However, consulting with a healthcare professional is always a good idea if you have a known nut allergy and are concerned about potential reactions to shea nut products.
FlexNow Ingredients
- SheaFlex 70: 2250mg of Shea nut extract.
- Protection of Joints: Concentrated Shea nut extracts have shown potential in reducing inflammation and protecting joints, offering relief from arthritis pain.
- Relief from Osteoarthritis Symptoms: A 2016 study found that shea nut oil relieves the symptoms of osteoarthritis and protects cartilage from destruction and degeneration.
- Sodium 10mg
Customer Reviews
Once again, finding reliable sources of reviews was challenging; those on Amazon were mixed, which is unsurprising when you consider everything. When you look at other manufacturers making Joint Health supplements, these manufacturers inevitably use a broad spectrum of ingredients that have been scientifically backed in the hope that one or more of these ingredients will have the desired joint health benefits.
My Review
Having tried many joint health supplements for my aches and pains, I had no preconceived ideas as it was the first time I had used Shea in any form as a joint health supplement. Honestly, I was disappointed with the results; although there were days when I felt some benefit, I found it ineffective most of the time. The product is missing a few additional medically backed ingredients that may help this supplement shine. Should the manufacturers decide to do this, I will gladly conduct an in-depth review. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this product for me.
My Final Thoughts on The Best Joint Supplement For Knees
Finding a joint health supplement that works and lives up to its hype can be daunting. In this review, I have tried to look at a mix of potential remedies for those everyday aches and pains, naturally and safely.
In this review, two products stood out far above the rest on the test. The most effective was FlexAgain by Nutra FA, which worked quickly and consistently; my only regret was coming off these to try other supplements and getting my number one Knee and Joint Health supplement award. Thank you, Nutra FA.
The second one that helped with my joint pain was Nordic Naturals, Ultimate Omega Xtra, and while it wasn't as consistent as FlexAgain or as quick working, it did a surprisingly respectable job. For this reason, it got my runners-up award.
