LEONARDTOWN, MD - In a recent business meeting, the Commissioners of St. Mary's County (CSMC) addressed significant local matters, including zoning amendments, social media litigation, and the advancement of the Southern Maryland 2030 Workforce Program.
The meeting commenced with traditional formalities – an invocation and the pledge of allegiance – followed by the approval of the consent agenda. The Commissioners' agenda was robust, reflecting their active role in shaping the county's future.
A notable moment was the presentation of a proclamation for Transit Equity Day, underscoring the county's commitment to equitable transportation solutions. This was followed by a commendation to Sheila Graziano, celebrating her retirement and acknowledging her contributions to the community.
A critical agenda item was the public hearing conducted by the Office of the County Attorney regarding a zoning amendment. Zoning decisions are pivotal in guiding the development and land use within the county, affecting both current residents and future generations.
During the County Administrator's time, the Commissioners undertook several key actions. They reviewed upcoming meeting agendas, a routine yet vital part of their governance, ensuring that future discussions and decisions are well-organized and transparent.
In a significant move, the CSMC agreed to join the multi-district social media litigation. This decision marks the county's involvement in broader legal challenges concerning social media's role and responsibilities.
The Commissioners also heard a presentation on the Southern Maryland 2030 Workforce Program. This initiative is crucial for the region's economic development, focusing on preparing the workforce for future challenges and opportunities.
Another major decision was approving a letter to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, indicating the Huntersville Rural Legacy Area (RLA) as the prioritized RLA for St. Mary's County. This decision reflects the county's strategic planning in preserving its rural character and natural resources.
Further emphasizing their commitment to public safety and preparedness, the Commissioners accepted grant funding from the Exelon Generation Company, LLC, on behalf of the Department of Emergency Services. This funding and the approved related budget amendment are a step towards enhancing the county's emergency response capabilities.
The Commissioners approved a Memorandum of Understanding between the Maryland Stadium Authority and the CSMC to boost local sports infrastructure to initiate Phase II of the Sports Complex. This development will provide the county with substantial recreational and economic benefits.
Additionally, the Commissioners approved the Speed Camera Ordinance to enhance road safety. They stipulated that all contracts awarded under this ordinance must receive CSMC approval before execution, ensuring oversight and accountability.
The meeting also included a legislative update from the Office of the County Attorney, informing the Commissioners on legal matters that may impact county governance.
The next CSMC business meeting is scheduled for February 6, 2024, at 9 a.m. These meetings, held in the CSMC Meeting Room of the Chesapeake Building in Leonardtown, are open to the public. They provide a platform for community engagement and are accessible live on the St. Mary's County Government Channel 95 or on-demand via the SMCG's YouTube Channel.
