I came across this on a social media feed quite a while ago.
And often like some things along this line or in this realm, it kind of hit me similar to getting hit by a train. More of a metaphorical train as compared to a real one.
Nevertheless, for an instant, it caused me to stop and think, "What actually do we strive for - what things are most important? - what do we expand all our energy and focus on?"
If we were to do some sort of survey of the things that people set goals for or strive to attain, what might that survey tell us? Obviously, I haven't undertaken any survey to determine what that list might look like. An educated(albeit debatable) guess would include financial goals; work/career advancement or career change; retirement goals; health goals, plus a whole host of others as well.
And these are all fine goals and dreams to strive for. However, one thing I don't often see and I'm trying to be positive here in that I'm not sure I've ever seen them or if I have - it has been few and far between is this.
Striving to simply better oneself as a person.
And not an airy-fairy vague statement along the lines of, "I'm striving to be a better person(we all say that from time to time)" - a vague utterance with no meat on bones of how you plan to do and achieve this.
A real plan on what about yourself you're working to improve on and how are you going to get there. All of those things I mentioned that many strive and work towards such as financial, work, and career goals are great.
But, what if you get there and you're still a dick-wad.
You get there and you still are the person that has no sympathy or empathy towards others. Still, the person that doesn't love themselves. Still, the person who bullies others because your self-esteem is so low it drags on the ground. Still, the person whose emotional baggage has had a long-term or everlasting effect on their children and family.
The question that needs asking is, "Are we going to strive for the same crap everyone else does .......... or strive for the things in life that are far more important?
I can't answer that for you.
