Tuleyome is excited to announce a donation drive this holiday season in partnership with REI for its Youth Booth Bank.
The Boot Bank program provides free six-month loans of hiking boots to youths in the local community, allowing them to trade up to larger boots as they grow. In addition to offering boots, Tulyome will soon begin offering loans for other equipment for youths, including tents, sleeping bags, jackets, gloves and backpacks.
The program's goal is to encourage youths and their families to experience the pleasure of hiking and to appreciate and value outdoor recreational opportunities.
Donation boxes are in place at the Sacramento, Roseville, and Folsom REI stores, as well as at Tulyome's Woodland office at 622 Main St. The boxes at the REI locations feature artwork created by Patwin and Zamora Elementary students on our recent field trips.
For the drive, Tulyome is looking for donations of new or used youth and adult hiking boots and shoes, youth backpacks, youth jackets, youth sleeping bags, and tents. Donation bins will be in place at the REI stores through Jan. 5, 2024, and at its Woodland office. The Boot Bank was started under the leadership of current Tuleyome Board member Steve Drown and was operated for many years by Davis Boy Scout Troop 111.
The Boot Bank operates out of a 1967 Divco step van formerly owned and operated by Marshall Rice in support of his dairy service to the Davis community for 34 years, from 1970 to 2004.
Alan Brattesani acquired the milk truck after Rice's passing in November 2014. Brattesani generously donated the truck to Tuleyome and funding for operational costs to support the Boot Bank.
Tuleyome is a nonprofit, non-partisan organization that engages in advocacy and active stewardship with diverse communities to conserve, enhance, restore, and enjoy the lands in the region. Its office is located at 622 Main St., Suite 200.
