I follow and have followed I bet for over 15 years or so, a discussion page/website dedicated to Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario.
Every day, I give the forum portion of the site a quick check to see if anything new or interesting has been posted by someone. Over the years, the amount of posts that show up daily seems to have declined a significant amount.
I think it can be attributed to the written forum style becoming slightly obsolete(not entirely sure this is the case).
As well, people are certainly busier and perhaps don't have the time to post questions or trip reports. In addition, over the time I've followed the group, there certainly have been other formats that have come online over that period which make searching for the answer to a question somewhat easier.
Over the time frame I've been hanging around there, many folks who were prolific posters have come and gone. Some moved on because of strife and conflict within the group(some topics are akin to throwing gasoline on a fire). For others, I assume that perhaps posting on the site was simply a chapter in their life and now they've moved on to other things. For a few others, they've passed on to the "big canoe lake in the sky."
All of this reminds me, of how many trips Lynn and I had made to Algonquin Park over the years. I can say for certain that during the 35-plus years we've been together, there hasn't been a year when we haven't made at least one trip.
Algonquin then and in many ways now, still feels like my soul refuge go-to spot. When life was closing in or when things weren't going as they should be,
Algonquin Park was the place we always headed off to. A place of solitude and peace. That spot to recharge your soul.
Algonquin brings back and holds an overwhelming chunk of my memory bank. I miss the place. I miss going. The road trips. The good weather and the horrific storms.
Unfortunately, we haven't or I haven't found a soul-spot here in Nova Scotia yet.
Maybe I never will. And that would be sad.
