Earlier this month, Pioneer High School SkillsUSA Chapter students won multiple awards during the organization's annual local competition.
According to a Woodland Joint Unified School District press release, SkillsUSA is a national organization serving more than 300,000 high school and college students and professional members in career and technical education training programs.
Students take classes and compete in areas including, Internet of Things (Maker), Drone Programming, Inventing Smart Solutions, Culinary Arts and Leadership Development. Through SkillsUSA, students gain self-esteem, pride in their work, and leadership and professional development skills to help them transition smoothly from school to the workplace.
"SkillsUSA helps prepare students for the workplace of today and the future," stated Pioneer High School teacher David Bayne. "The local competition helps students show their workplace readiness and helps them develop themselves so they can become leaders in the world of work. These students represent the best of today and tomorrow and will become the leaders of tomorrow's workforce. We are proud of the Pioneer High School students who have shown what they have learned so far and are excited to see what they will be able to accomplish in the future."
SkillsUSA student Ella Sivers says the competition is a great way to test one's skills.
"Locals gives me the opportunity to execute skills I've learned in class in a competitive manner that challenges me and my classmates," Sivers stated. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to test my resourcefulness and abilities."
The Nov. 3 completion, which took place on the Pioneer High School campus, allowed students to connect with and receive professional development from community members and feedback from SkillsUSA chapter leaders.
"Locals is a great event for every Pioneer SkillsUSA member," stated student Sophie Bunn, 2023 National Gold Medalist in Internet of Things and Smart Home and a SkillsUSA chapter officer. "It is the highlight of the fall semester. Students develop professional skills with real industry partners while showcasing their technical skills."
"The SkillsUSA locals competition was an exciting event for members to harness their professional development skills and build their career readiness skills," added SkillsUSA chapter officer Joelle Bikoba. "Students received professional feedback on their resumes and participated in team bonding activities geared towards SkillsUSA knowledge."
Dean Bunn, a parent of SkillsUSA students, said the program teaches students valuable skills.
"For students going into a tech-related career, SkillsUSA provides a solid foundation and opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge in a competitive environment," he said.
In addition to being educational, the competition was also an entertaining experience.
"It was fun interacting and guiding the students," stated Breyden Skinner, SkillsUSA chapter officer.
