KELSEYVILLE— Matt Wotherspoon won the 30th annual Lake County Tournament of Champions this past Saturday at Buckingham Golf and Country Club by shooting a rock solid two under par 70 to win by six strokes. Wotherspoon just finished his fourth year of college golf at California State University-San Bernardino and will give high level amateur tournaments a try for the next few years.
He opened his round on Saturday with a three under par outward score of 33. It was definitely an inconsistent nine with three bogeys, one par, four birdies, and a strong eagle three on the par five ninth hole. Matt couldn't keep up the pace and made two birdies on the back nine on the par five 13th and 16th holes. He added three bogeys to shoot 37 and post 70 for the victory. It marked the fifth time in six years that Wotherspoon has won the TOC dating back to his high school days.
Hidden Valley Lake superintendent Billy Witt finished second overall with a score of four over par 76. Witt is a three-time past champion of the TOC. Jeremiah Valador of Kelseyville finished third with a 78. It was his highest finish on the Lake County Amateur Golf Circuit. Gene Manning of Hidden Valley Lake and Pete Wotherspoon of Buckingham tied for fourth place with an 82. Juan Lopez of Lakeport posted an 83 while Shawn Auten of Kelseyville came in with a score of 86.
Ted Knowles of Kelseyville ran away with the net flight for golfers with handicaps of 10 and above. Knowles carries a 17 handicap and he shot a strong 81 to finish atop the leader board with a net score of 64. He was six strokes ahead of Dr. Bob Jolin of Lakeport who shot a net 70. Rick Easter of Lakeport finished third with a net 73 while the much improved Brian Castro of Upper Lake came in with a net 74.
Billy Witt won the senior division of the Tournament of Champions with his score of 76. The net champion, Ted Knowles, was second with an 81 while Gene Manning was one further behind with an 82. Juan Lopez shot 83 and Rick Easter rounded out the top five with an 84.
The Tournament of Champions closed out year 30 for the Lake County Amateur Golf Circuit. This year's circuit once again hosted 10 open tournaments and two junior tourneys. Matt Wotherspoon garnered more than enough player performance points to capture On the Links Golfer of the Year honors. Juan Lopez also had a strong year and was the senior golfer of the year by a wide margin. The net and the senior net races were closely contested among four golfers with Rick Easter taking home the net golfer of the year trophy while Dr. Bob Jolin finished atop the senior net standings. It was the second time Lopez had won senior golfer of the year honors. It was the fifth time Easter was the top net golfer while Jolin has been the senior net golfer of the year on four occasions.
The Lake County Amateur Golf Circuit will start its 31st season of hosting amateur golf tournaments with the playing of the Lake County One Person Scramble next February.
