Overnight fire destroyed a combination barn / residence on FM 1374 west of I-45
Just before 10:30 Wednesday evening, New Waverly Firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire in the 5100 block of FM 1374 west of I-45.
The first crew to arrive reported heavy fire conditions throughout a metal building that served as both a barn and residence for the property. Four NWFD apparatus responded to the scene and were later joined by units from the Huntsville and North Montgomery County Fire Departments.
Firefighters from New Waverly Engine 71 entered the burning building to search for victims and found the resident's dog under a bed, overcome by smoke. The crew removed the dog and revived it on scene with the assistance of Walker County EMS. The dog was taken to a veterinary clinic in Conroe for further evaluation and treatment.
While they were able to save the dog, the fire did destroy most of the structure and its contents, including agricultural equipment and a large number of hay bales. The resident was not home at the time of the fire and there were no other reported injuries. Pct. 4 Commissioner Brandon Decker responded to the scene with heavy equipment to assist firefighters in removing the burning hay from the building, allowing them to fully extinguish the fire around 2am this morning.
NWFD Fire Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
