November 17, 2023 is National Take a Hike Day. Hiking is something my family enjoys but doesn't get to do nearly enough. We are blessed to live in an area with a national forest nearby, as well as many state parks and state recreation areas.
We have a few favorite things we'd like to share today for you other hiking enthusiasts.
1. Book: The Mountains-to-Sea Trail Across North Carolina: Walking a Thousand Miles through Wildness, Culture and History by Arcadia Publishing
This book has so many great NC trails in it, and it has so much information. I highly recommend it- even though I haven't been to some of these trails, I have read a lot about them and learned a lot about NC. I plan to walk the MST in its entirety when I retire. You can get the book here on Barnes and Noble.
2. AllTrails app: available on the Apple Apps store and the Google Play store
AllTrails turns your phone into a GPS so you don't get lost. You can also search trails and read about them, track your distance and progress, and sync to your fitness apps. There is both a paid version and a free version- we have a free version that we are very happy with.
3. Book: A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
This book is hilarious, entertaining, and you won't be able to put it down. I read it when I was in high school and it's still one of my favorites.
