Woodland's The HIVE will celebrate its second anniversary Friday and Saturday with a full schedule of interactive activities.
"This year we celebrate 44 years in business as Z Specialty Food and the second year in our new home, The HIVE," Joshua Zeldner, nectar director for Z Specialty Food, said. "We built The HIVE with the hopes that it would become a vibrant community gathering space. Over the last two years, this vision has come to life."
The anniversary weekend — held at The HIVE located at 1221 Harter Ave. — will include activities that teach guests how to taste honey and mead "from the pros," participate in tours of the net zero production facility and pollinator gardens and relax in the courtyard while listening to live music from Jelly Bread, Da Exchange, Hayez, 2 humans and Jared Johnson, according to a press release.
Kids' activities will include a scavenger hunt through two acres of pollinator habitat, kids-only giveaways and educational honey bee shows and live beehive demonstrations with Unckle Jer.
"Our anniversary party gives us a chance to connect with the community all weekend long and give back with free music, deep discounts and educational activities while we celebrate honey, pollinators and, most importantly, friends and community," Zeldner emphasized.
The event will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday allowing guests to "taste and learn" about over 30 varietal kinds of honey, honey fruit spreads, nut butters and chocolate nut spreads, and a hand-picked selection of mead, according to the business' press release. Additionally, The HIVE's craft kitchen will feature a special menu showcasing local and seasonal produce, products and honeys.
"During this year's anniversary party, I'll be leading several guided honey tastings to help participants of all ages notice each varietal honey's unique color, flavor, aroma and texture," Amina Harris, queen bee for Z Specialty Food and Zeldner's mother, said. "Everyone walks away with a new discovery."

During The HIVE's one-year anniversary last year, Zeldner said, "It brings tears to my eyes" whenever he sees people enjoying the space, live music, food and garden.
"The overwhelming feedback and support from our community feels deeply validating," he emphasized.
Shawn DeArmond attended last year's celebration noting that he's been visiting Z Specialty Food's holiday shopping extravaganzas for years to get honey at a discounted price. He said he planned on coming to more of The HIVE's events after seeing how nice the space was.
"It's just a beautiful place to come hang out in the afternoon and try some of their food," DeArmond stressed last year.
DeArmond argued that The HIVE is a success story of a small local business with a great vision and intention that was able to stay connected with its community.
"To see them grow out of their old space and build a space that's custom for them…is awesome," he added. "It's a very welcoming and inviting space. I usually only come here for this event but I might come other times now since I know they're open more often."
