For the third consecutive year, the fastest girl in the Golden Empire League is a student at Pioneer High School.
Senior Briana Parker was selected as GEL MVP following the cross country league championship held at Sierra College on Oct. 26.
"Bri is a phenomenal athlete and always so great to work with," stated coach Rob Olson. "She has such a positive and mature attitude. She carries the team along in a big way."
Parker was one of four Patriots to be selected to the All-GEL team after finishing in the top 10 at the GEL meet. Joining her was fellow senior, Diego O'Quelly, junior Juan Ramirez and sophomore Camila Perez.
According to Olson, the three-mile course had difficult trail running after a downpour of rain occurred the weekend prior. Parker, who is committed to play softball at Southern Oregon University, ran a season-best 20 minutes and 47 seconds to finish first among the varsity girls.
The superb senior finished nearly a full minute faster than the runner-up. Perez placed fourth with a career-best of 21:44.6.
O'Quelly ran an 18:29.1 on the varsity boys side which earned him seventh place against "stiff competition," according to Olson. Ramirez tallied a time of 19:04.4 to finish in eighth place.
Pioneer will continue its season on Saturday at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Sub-Section Cross Country Meet at Frogtown, located at the Calaveras County Fairground.
"I'm really stoked for sub-sections," Parker foreshadowed. "Our team has really put in the training and it will pay off this weekend with some great results."
