YoloWorks!, the Yolo County Workforce Innovation Board and the Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency are launching a free Spanish-language version of their Northstar Digital Literacy classes.
These classes have been created to assist Yolo County job seekers in acquiring the essential digital literacy skills necessary for job searching, securing employment and managing daily tasks online. This initiative directly responds to the feedback received from Yolo County farmworkers during the Winters Financial Assistance Program, who expressed a need for basic computer classes to enhance their knowledge and self-sufficiency when applying to programs and for their leisure activities.
The Spanish Northstar Digital Literacy classes are open to all Spanish speakers, and no prior computer experience is necessary. Any Yolo County residents can participate at no cost.
These classes will begin on Nov. 1, 2023 and will take place every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. until Feb. 28, 2024. The classes will be held at the Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency's Madison Room, located at 25 N. Cottonwood St., Woodland, CA 95776.
The curriculum will cover essential computer skills (basic computer skills, internet basics, using email, Windows, Mac OS), essential software skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and using technology for routine activities (social media, information literacy and creative job search). Anyone can access the modules and take the tests online at http://www.DigitalLiteracyAssessment.org. Upon completing each test, users will receive results outlining their mastered skills and areas in need of improvement. Many community organizations offer computer classes aligned with Northstar Digital Literacy Standards.
All Yolo County residents interested in embarking on their digital literacy journey independently can visit http://www.YoloWorks.org. Under the JobSeeker tab, they can click on NorthStar Digital Literacy. Additionally, those interested are welcome to visit one of the YoloWorks! Employment Centers in Woodland or West Sacramento or contact the YoloWorks! Employment Center via email at JobCenter@YoloCounty.org.
