Four Woodland Joint Unified School District classified employees were recognized by the Yolo County School Boards Association (YCSBA) for Excellence in Education earlier this week.

Teresa Velasco, a baker at Prairie Elementary School; Michelle Montoya, an office coordinator at Spring Lake Elementary School; Lucila Gomez, a paraprofessional II at Freeman Elementary School; and Jose Goche, a custodian II at Plainfield Elementary School, were all honored with the Classified School Employee of the Year Award for their respective professions at YCSBA's annual award ceremony on Monday, Sept. 25.

YCSBA recognizes excellence from the five school districts across Yolo County, individuals and programs from the Yolo County Office of Education (YCOE), and the Los Rios and Yuba community college districts.

WJUSD Board President Rogelio Villagrana introduced each employee at the ceremony.

"It is my honor and privilege to announce the recipients of the Classified School Employee of the Year Awards and to help recognize them for their dedication and commitment to our school District, our students, and our community," he said.

Teresa Velasco has worked as a baker and laundry service worker for WJUSD for 14 years. She bakes a variety of baked goods from scratch to help nourish students and, as the sole laundry service worker for the district, helps maintain cleanliness and ensures that staff always looks professional.

"This means a lot to me because I was not expecting this," Velasco said. "It came as a surprise to me. What I like best about my job is working with children, serving students during lunchtime, and helping my co-workers."

Jose Goche, who has served as a custodian for Plainfield Elementary School for five years, was recognized for exceptional service in keeping the campus clean, safe, and ready for all students and staff to learn and work.

"I would like to thank my parents for the upbringing and great examples they provided me, which is the greatest legacy they left me," Goche said. "I would also like to thank teacher Jessica Friedman and principal Phillip Pinegar for their unconditional support, the Plainfield staff, and God for helping me in my projects, not only at work but also in my personal life."

Michelle Montoya, who has been working as an office coordinator for Spring Lake Elementary School School for five years, was recognized for her professionalism, great customer service, and creating a friendly and inclusive environment.

"I was shocked when I received the news that I was selected to receive this award," she said. "It feels wonderful to be acknowledged and appreciated. I really enjoy the variety that being an office coordinator encompasses. In addition to administrative tasks, I also get to serve other staff members, parents, and students. I am truly blessed in my position at Spring Lake."

Lucila Gomez, who has worked for the district for 25 years as a paraprofessional, was recognized for her dedication to ensuring that all students achieve academic success.

"I was surprised to receive the email and tried to figure out why I had received it," Gomez said. "I thought that they had made a mistake and had sent it to the wrong person. I like working with the students and love to see the growth that they make throughout the year."

Superintendent Elodia Ortega-Lampkin congratulated the employees for their stellar performance.

"I would like to congratulate each of our employees for being recognized for their outstanding work ethic, high-quality service, and dedication to our students and families," Ortega-Lampkin said. "Because of our employees' unwavering commitment to excellence, our students are on the way to being prepared for college or a career. As a community, we all play a vital role in student success, and our staff's contributions are invaluable."

Both Teresa Velasco and Jose Goche were also named Yolo County Classified Employee of the Year and will be considered for the 2024 Classified Employee of the Year Award by the California Department of Education.
