Lake County CWA presents second day of AgVenture program
The Lake County Chapter of California Women for Agriculture's (CWA) 2023 AgVenture class gathered at Umpqua Bank in Lakeport for its second of four sessions on September 22, this time for an in-depth look at the wine and grape industry.
Day Two gave class members insight into what it takes to successfully farm and sell winegrapes, the process of wine production and regulatory challenges of commercial winemaking, and the marketing and sales of wine in a three-tiered distribution system.
The day kicked off with a video on the geology and soils of the volcanic winegrowing region and a presentation on the local watershed by the County's Deputy Director of Water Resources Marina Deligiannis.
Class members tn embarked on a behind-the-scenes tour at Kendall-Jackson's commercial winery in Lakeport by K-J winemaker Fritz Meier, just as Sauvignon Blanc harvest was getting into full swing. The facility was a beehive of activity as trucks loaded with harvested winegrapes were weighed and then unloaded into the hopper for de-stemming and crushing. Forklifts stacked with oak barrels zipped around while stainless tanks were being sanitized.
After being treated to a fresh tank sample and a finished wine sample, the class then went on a guided educational tour of the Kelsey Bench, Big Valley District, and Red Hills AVAs narrated by Terry Dereniuk, Annette Hopkins, Toni Scully and Sharron Zoller. Then up at Beckstoffer Vineyards' Crimson Ridge vineyard, General Manager Pedro Rubio spoke on commercial winegrape farming, sustainable practices, and labor requirements with the backdrop of sweeping vistas of the volcanic region.
The afternoon featured a lunch catered by Rosey Cooks and sponsored by the Lake County Winegrape Commission, an overview on lake ecology by Greg Giusti, a primer on the Irrigated Lands program by Rebecca Harper, a presentation on regional marketing and research programs by Debra Sommerfield, and concluded with a marketing and sales panel discussion moderated by Terry Dereniuk with Bryan Kane of Sol Rouge and On The Waterfront, Jonathan Walters of Brassfield Estate, and Angie Shannon of Shannon Family of Wines.
The October session will highlight walnuts and November will highlight olives. Expert speakers will discuss a range of ag-related topics.
Launched in 2010, AgVenture is an innovative agricultural educational program designed for non-farming community members and others who wish to understand the vital contributions of agriculture to Lake County's quality of life.
The AgVenture program is guided by a steering committee, all CWA members, including Rebecca Harper, Colleen Rentsch, Toni Scully, Bonnie Sears, Debra Sommerfield, Katherine VanDerWall, and Sharron Zoller.
