PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – The Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter, a beacon of hope for animal welfare in Calvert County, is set to celebrate its fifth anniversary on November 1, 2023. Named in honor of the late County Commissioner Linda L. Kelley, a tireless advocate for animal rights, this shelter has become a vital resource for the community since opening its doors in 2018.
In her enduring legacy, Kelley envisioned a haven for animals, emphasizing humane treatment and support for Calvert County residents. Over the years, the shelter has extended its scope by collaborating with the Department of Public Safety's Animal Control Division.
Deputy Director Crystal Dowd of Public Safety expressed her gratitude to the community for their unwavering support, saying, "We thank the community for its unwavering dedication and commitment to our mission. Together, we have made a profound difference in the lives of animals and the people of Calvert County. Here's to many more years of hard work, compassion, countless lives saved, and positively impacting our region."
Since its inception, the shelter has evolved in various meaningful ways to fulfill its mission, including:
Foster and Volunteer Program: Establishing a robust program that saves animals requiring round-the-clock care and provides enrichment and socialization, ensuring their readiness for adoption.
Rescue Partnerships: Through fruitful collaborations, the shelter has extended its reach, finding loving homes for 1,384 animals.
Full-time Veterinarian: The addition of a full-time veterinarian has enabled on-site surgical procedures, such as spaying and neutering, contributing to effective pet population control.
Monthly Drive-Thru Free Rabies Clinic: A monthly drive-thru clinic offering essential vaccinations to protect the community's pets' health.
Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) Grant for Spay/Neuter: The MDA grant empowers the shelter to provide free spay/neuter services, assisting pet owners who might otherwise struggle to afford these crucial procedures.
In commemoration of its fifth anniversary, and as a token of appreciation for the community's enduring support, the shelter will offer a special reduced adoption fee of just $5 for all animals to qualified adopters from Tuesday, October 31, through Saturday, November 4, 2023.
