Hundreds of dry cornstalks rustled in the wind as workers made the final push on Wednesday to transform Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo into Fright Fest, one of the premier haunted attractions in Northern California.
Boasting five scare houses and five walk-through scare zones the park, after dark is not for the faint of heart. Daytime activities for all ages include Kids Boo Fest, with Halloween fun for the little ghouls and ghosts including a kid's foam party, and Oktoberfest with an array of German fare and lively entertainment. As the sun sets the monsters are "Unleashed" in a new show offered with Fright Fest admission and recommended for those 13 and older.

"We are incredibly excited to unleash a Fright Fest event that leads the way in bringing terrifying scares for our guests," said Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Park General Manager Kirk Smith. "Six Flags is about creating fun and thrilling memories while providing an exceptional guest experience, and this year's edition of Fright Fest will be no different. When you add the family-friendly offering of Kids Boo Fest during the daytime and the special food, beverage and entertainment options that are part of Oktoberfest, there won't be a better place to celebrate autumn in Northern California."
Fright Fest is attempting something new this year with Club Fear in 3D. For an additional price, thrill seekers can don 3D glasses to face their fears in a phobia-filled nightmare haunted attraction.
Malyssa Williams, who usually works with the Looney Toons characters, had her hands full helping put the last touches on Club Fear. Her favorite haunt in the park was the returning CarnEvil, a traveling, backwoods carnival in desperate need of fresh meat for its circus of horrors.
Marketing and Public Relations Manager Marc Merino echoed Williams' sentiment.
"There is something about the creepy clowns under the big top that is really well done," Merino said.
Ladders flanked the two castle-like towers adorned with a giant glowing skull that marked the entrance to Midnight Mansion. The site of what was once the walrus enclosure has been transformed into Grimmlee Mansion. According to the haunts' lore, "Mourning the death of his beloved wife, tortured Professor Silas Grimmlee, decides to dabble in the dark arts to raise her back from the dead, but also calls forth a menagerie of macabre monstrosities from the beyond."
For those who are not daring enough to enter the horrifying haunts, there are five walk-through scare zones spread throughout Discovery Kingdom. Murder Mill, Weeping Wharf and Corpse Crossing are the new additions joining Dead Man's Party and the Slasher Circus in thoroughly creeping out the paths of the park.
Fright Fest is a special ticketed event that requires a separate ticket for admission, with an exception for valid Season Passholders.
