It might sound like an acquired taste, but Mushroom Honey is the latest in a range of organic Hungarian honeys from artisan producer Honey Heaven. Needless to say, it's the first of its kind on the market!
It's made using Honey Heaven's organic Acacia Honey and a freeze-dried mix of seven organic mushroom varieties: Reishi, Chaga, Shitake, Maitake, Lions mane, Cordyceps, and Tremella - all of which are grown in Hampshire.
The fresh mushrooms are freeze-dried, powdered and blended into a smooth, easy to use paste.
Most other products featuring mushroom usually only use two or three varieties and have been dehydrated prior to freeze drying and being made into a powder.
But the seven mushroom varieties used in Honey Heaven's Mushroom Honey have not been dehydrated during the process and so retain 90% of the goodness of the raw mushrooms.
Honey Heaven suggests spreading the Mushroom Honey on toast, adding it to porridges or smoothies, or stirring into a cup of tea or coffee as a natural sweetener.
In fact, adding it your cup of coffee is said to help release the mushrooms' adaptogenic properties, which can help balance the body's cortisol levels and eliminate the jitters and heart palpitations some people are prone to when drinking coffee.
Although we haven't tried it, the honey is said to taste smooth and sweet, with dark chocolatey undertones - and not a hint of savoury or vegetation.
Both the honey and powdered mushrooms are considered superfoods which are high in nutrients and work together to enhance their individual health benefits.
The polysaccharides in the mushrooms, for example, can help support the immune system and boost energy levels.
Meanwhile, the organic acacia honey contains trace vitamins and minerals, including magnesium and Vitamin C, as well as several antioxidants which can help to protect against chronic conditions, such as heart disease.
They can also help support brain function and skin health.
