Astronaut Nicole Mann, the first Native American woman to launch into space, is scheduled to visit Covelo Saturday.
According to a press release prepared by the Round Valley Indian Tribes, "NASA Astronaut Col. Nicole Mann (Wailaki of the Round Valley Indian Tribes) and Commander of NASA's SpaceX Crew 5, will be featured in Saturday's parade" as part of the planned Indian Days festivities in Covelo this weekend.
Mann is also expected to "speak with the community at the Hidden Oak Amphitheater" at 2 p.m. on Sept. 23.
The release notes that "native and non-native community members are invited to join in on the events at Hidden Oaks Park," and that the "festivities include traditional food, cultural dances, downtown parade, live music, contests, mud bogging, a softball tournament and a kids' carnival. Free camping is provided."
The festivities will take place at Hidden Oaks Park rodeo grounds and amphitheater, located at 76699 Covelo Road.
The schedule of events is:
- Friday, Sept. 22: Softball Tournament, Mud bogging (off-road motorsport racing)
- Saturday, Sept. 23: Parade in downtown Covelo, cultural dances to follow at Hidden Oaks Park; NASA Astronaut Col. Nicole Mann Hidden Oak Amphitheater (2 p.m.), softball tournament, horseshoe tournament; youth three -on-three basketball, Senior Center Chili Cook Off.
- Sunday, Sept. 24: Softball Tournament Championship, Gospel music at Hidden Oak Park, Cultural Dances from Native Groups across California, Western Play Day.
