Buddha says "A child without courage is like a night without stars" and a group of young actors are ready to take the stage to sing about a "hard knock life" this weekend at the Bay Area Theater.
Director Stacey Loew believes it would be beneficial for children to see other children on stage.
"People might think, my child won't be able to sit through Children's Theatre. So they get fussy," says Loew. "It's OK. We just want them to and it's amazing to see some kids perform. I think it's important for people to introduce their children to the art of theater. It might be interesting for them to either pursue acting or go to see more theater because they can relate to the kids on the stage."
Loew believes the young actors will learn grace and life skills from performing live.
"There are some of my kids I've seen enormous changes in," said Loew. "For instance, when they first enter an audition. I've seen some kids break down in tears — they just couldn't go on. And now, they're like dancing and singing and smiling on stage. There's a big difference. I don't advocate that children follow in my footsteps and do theater as a career. I want to give them the tools to succeed in life.
"Auditioning is just like interviewing for a job. I want the kids to learn poise and confidence and that will play later on in life when they're in the workforce. And of course, I want to groom kids to be my next generation of theatergoers."
The role of Annie will be played by Came'a McKinney. Loew knew the moment she heard McKinney sing, she was perfect for the part.
"Came'a did a wonderful job. She was the right age and had a lot of personality. Hearing her sing, I said 'This is my Annie!,'" said Loew.
Loew values the friends and family of the children actors who are present at their performances and show support.
"Friends and family love to see the little ones up on stage," said Loew. "I remember when I was little and I performed as a child it meant the world to me to have my family there. It's endearing to see your child or a little one on stage. We are having another group of kids coming that don't know anybody in the show. But it's an outside organization that just wanted to introduce their child children's group to theater. I applaud them for doing that."
Annie Kids! The Musical! Will be performed this weekend from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Sunday's show commences from 3-5 p.m. All shows will be held at 515 Broadway St. in Vallejo. Children's tickets are $10 and $15 for adults. Children under 5 years old have free entry.
