- Stage 2. Ortu di u Piobbu-Carrozzu
- July 2023
Last night up in the mountains the wind howled. The positive was it kept things cool in the tent, the negative was we felt at times throughout the night we were going to either get blown off the mountain or our tent was going to be ruined. Neither happened and we survived another day.
Yesterday had been such a tough day I was slightly nervous about what lay ahead. But we could not ponder as we had another long hard day ahead.
We started the trek slowly through a mystical birch forest. The scramble turns into a demanding up and down climb.
The terrain is demanding all the way along with rocky slabs, rocky passages where you sometimes have to put your hands in, and to top it all off there is an endless and leg-breaking final scree.
We soon realised yesterday had just been a warm-up to let us taste the terrain!
Some of the terrain, this is a good path
We finally arrived at camp hours later and tried to find a good spot. There was no good spot. We had to make do with a tiny space between some bushes with an army of ants by-passing us. The whole campsite spelt of sewage, it was pretty disgusting. To top it all off there was no water whatsoever which meant no shower, no washing clothes but more importantly no dinner or actual drinking water. Eventually they got the water back on but at this stage we only had the energy to make dinner and get sorted for our tomorrow. With this trek it's not just the difficult terrain you've to conquer it's the harsh 'living conditions' also.
Refuge Carrozzu
We caught up with Mike again over a drink and then a couple of girls who we got talking to from Edinburgh joined us. Mike had us in stitches describing his death defying day on the mountains which sounded like something straight out of K2 The Movie! He is now booking tents from the campsites, sleeping in his clothes as he has no sleeping bag, eating campsite food (which is undesirable) but he said he felt so much better with a light load. We really need to learn a thing or two from this guy. We are in Corsica AND STILL have waterproofs in the rucksack!
Video
Hope you enjoy the video above. Taking as much as we can but at times the terrain is so steep/dangerous we cannot capture the full trek.
