A Spokane man wanted for a violent attack in Washington State was arrested Friday for allegedly attacking a homeless man in Willits while he was sleeping, the Willits Police Department reported.
According to the WPD, around 2 a.m. June 29 officers were "contacted by local transients reporting they had found a fellow transient violently assaulted and severely injured." The victim was described as having been attacked by an unknown person while he was sleeping in the area of Main Street and East Van Lane.
The afternoon of June 29, the WPD received an alert from the Spokane Police Department in Washington State regarding Charles L. Nutter, 30, who was wanted in connection with the "stabbing of a transient in Spokane on June 6," and was believed to be in the Willits area at the time of the assault in Mendocino County.
While reviewing relevant surveillance video, officers reported determining that the suspect in the June 29 attack was "wearing clothing with a distinctive logo (and) were able to match Nutter by his distinctive clothing from the surveillance photos received from Spokane PD alert with the surveillance photos obtained from local businesses."
On June 30, Mendocino County law enforcement agencies were informed that Nutter was in Fort Bragg, and officers from the Fort Bragg Police Department arrested Nutter for the Spokane PD warrants. At the time of his arrest, Nutter was described as "wearing the same clothing seen in the surveillance photos from both the Spokane PD and Willits PD cases."
Nutter was booked into the Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and being a fugitive from justice. He is currently being held without bail while awaiting extradition to Spokane.
The WPD reports that as of July 3, the man attacked in Willits is reported to be in stable condition, and the assault on him is still being investigated.
The WPD also expressed gratitude to the FBPD "for their assistance and apprehension of Nutter, (and to) local businesses for their assistance as well."
