In the still dark morning I hear the slamming screen door at my Nona's house and her yelling don't let the door slam. I smell the coffee and the bacon that I no longer eat having been a vegetarian longer than a meat eater now. I hear the creaky floor and the tv on low volume. I know Paw Paw will be heading out to work painting houses. I know later we'll be in the garden picking beans and cucumbers and tomatoes and peas that we will shell and snap and can. I won't want to touch the cucumbers with onions swimming in a vinegar bath with a dusting of salt and pepper but today I would love that treat from the garden. I know there will be lightning bugs and sweet tea on the front lawn at the end of a long hot summer day. I can still feel the sweet fatigue of hard garden work and reward mixed with love and peace that you can only find in nature especially when with people who love you. See you tomorrow friends.
