Vallejo runners are lacing up for a day of action Sunday at the annual Mare Island half marathon.
The race, which will start at 8 a.m. at Coal Shed Brewery at 850 Nimitz Ave., is already booked solid with 500 people registered, organizer Justin Saroyan said. Some day-of registrations might be possible, however. Runners and spectators alike can also browse local vendors' booths and "enjoy the finish line vibe" as contestants return to the brewery run by the Mare Island Brewing Company.
Saroyan, who coordinated the race through his Vallejo-based group iRecreate, said he loves to see people come together for these kinds of events.
"We really wanted to make this a Vallejo race, because I've lived in this community for 45 years and I just really wanted to give back to this community," he said.
Saroyan's company has been hosting Mare Island races most years since 2015, according to its website. True to iRecreate's aggressive slogan, "Burn your couch," the organizer said he wants to see more people getting outdoors.
"We want people to live a more active lifestyle and get out and recreate," he said.
After the half marathon, a 10K race will take place at 9:15 a.m., followed by a 5K at 9:45 a.m. Proceeds will go toward The Morethanacut Foundation, which sponsors tuition for aspiring barbers and cosmetologists.
The race's sponsors this year include the Mare Island Brewing Company, the Mare Island Company and J.D. Miller CPA.
