UPPER LAKE — Freshmen Jimmy Sanchez and Tyler Collins both went 4-for-4 on Wednesday afternoon as the Upper Lake Cougars banged out 18 hits in a 13-5 North Central League III varsity baseball victory over the Anderson Valley Panthers at Upper Lake.
Upper Lake (4-1 league, 4-4 overall) had a 10-1 lead after two innings. Anderson Valley was never closer than 10-4.
Ray Rahmer, one of only two seniors on an 18-man Upper Lake roster where half the players are freshmen, pitched the first two innings for the victory. His younger brother, George, relieved and worked the final five innings.
Collins caught the entire game and drove in two of Upper Lake's runs. Sanzhez, who split time between right field and third base, had one RBI. The team's other senior, Dylan Slater, went 2-for-5 with two RBI and Jaden Nunes went 2-for-4. Ten different players had at least one hit.
Upper Lake honored its two seniors — Slater and Ray Rahmer — following the game. The Cougars are currently tied with Point Arena for the NCL III lead. If the two teams finish as co-champions, a tiebreaker game will be held next week to decide which of the two receives the league's automatic berth into the North Coast Section Division 6 playoffs later this month.
Upper Lake plays a league doubleheader Friday in Mendocino. The first game begins at 2 p.m.
