SAN FRANCISCO — Some Giants' injury updates Saturday their twilight start at Oracle Park against the Milwaukee Brewers:
LHP Alex Wood (left hamstring strain) — Had bullpen session Friday and took another step forward Saturday.
"He was actually out there running sprints today, so I feel good about him starting a rehab assignment," Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. "I'm not quite sure what exact date is but it's coming up."
Wood last pitched on April 18, when he departed in the third inning of a road game against the Miami Marlins. He is 0-0 with a 1.80 earned run average in three starts.
OF Bryce Johnson (concussion) — Was checked out by the team doctor Friday and was scheduled for a rehab assignment Saturday for Triple-A Sacramento.
SS Brandon Crawford (right calf strain) — Playing catch an hitting, with running progression to start this weekend.
OF/DH Darin Ruf (right wrist) — Continuing rehab assignment in Sacramento.
OF Mike Yastrzemski (left hamstring strain) — Will begin playing catch soon.
Schmitt working at second base
Casey Schmitt, the Giants' No. 4 ranked prospect by MLB.com, has played three games at second base of late for Triple-A Sacramento.
Schmitt, 24 has played third base and shortstop and from Kapler has seen, the transition has been a smooth one to second base.
"Everything I've seen on video suggests that he's going to take to the position well," Kapler said. "Casey is a very athletic defender, to play shortstop last year and in spring training looked pretty good. I feel the same is probably going to be true of second base, although it's not going to be perfect."
"The theory here i smore paths to the major leagues for young, developing prospects and more flexibility once he gets to the major leagues."
Sunday's starter
The Giants close out the three-game series against Milwaukee with right-hander Ross Stripling (0-1, 6.10 ERA). The Brewers have not announced a starter.
In his last start, Stripling received no decision in a 7-3 loss to the Houston Astros, giving up two earned runs in five innings.
The Giants host the Washington Nationals for a three-game series starting Monday night at Oracle Park.
