A year after being swept by Vanden High school, the Vacaville High School baseball team flipped the script on Friday.
Last season, the Vikings swept the Bulldogs in a three-game series, but it was Vacaville that brought out the brooms this week, defeating Vanden 3-2 on Friday.
Vacaville Head Coach Stu Clary described this win as "super gratifying" to "beat a quality opponent"
"They work hard. We work hard. We respect the heck out of them," Clary said. "They're always a very well-coached and talented team. Anytime we're lucky enough to get a win against a team like that, much less sweep a three-game series, we'll savor that and then get back to work. They swept us last year, so we returned the favor this year."
Tension rose from players throughout the contest, leaving umpires to calm the situation.
"There's no real animosity, it's like a sibling rivalry," said Clary. "It's a spirited rivalry. All the kids know each other. The coaches know each other. We are all friends. The kids are friends."
Pitcher Finn Chapman was Clary's pick for the game's MVP. Chapman had nine strikeouts and earned the win on the mound.
"Finn Chapman had all his pitches working and dominated that game. We didn't win that game without Finn's strong outing on the mound." said Clary. "He's a fiery kid and He's super competitive. I've been here awhile now and he's one of the most competitive kids we've ever had."
Despite three years on the team, Chapman began pitching just four months ago. Prior to his new position, he was a catcher and outfielder.
"I love to pitch with intensity. I love to keep my team fired up, I don't think I would have pitched as well if it wasn't for my team and definitely my coaches. We prepared for this kind of stuff all week. It's definitely earned," said Chapman.
Chapman said the intensity of the game was a factor for both sides.
"They were competitive, they did not stop chirping the whole game. I like the intensity and I love to play teams with fire," said Chapman.
The second inning was the most productive for the Bulldogs, who scored all three of their runs in the inning.
Other offensive leaders for Vacaville included Cal Elvis, who had a double and an RBI. Nik Rostak also contributed with a hit and an RBI.
Meanwhile Vanden could only muster four hits on the day. Alex Maushart, Aidan Robles, Bryce Alcantara and Jovan Ochoa had hits for the Vikings.
Vacaville improved to 13-9 and 9-3 in the Monticello Empire League. The Bulldogs are tied for first place in league play with Rodriguez.
Vanden fell to 6-6 in the MEL with the loss.
