A 15-year-old girl has been arrested in connection with the death of another teenager found dead Saturday in a field in Covelo, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office reported.
According to the MCSO, deputies responded to the 23800 block of Howard Street in Covelo around 11:30 a.m. April 15 when it was reported that a dead body had been found in a vacant field.
When they arrived, the deputies contacted the uncle of Ruby Sky Montelongo, a 16-year-old Covelo resident whom family members were searching for because the teen did not return home Friday evening. The uncle told deputies that he called the MCSO after finding his niece dead in the field.
MCSO detectives then responded to the scene and began an investigation, which revealed that on Friday evening, "Montelongo had been socializing with a 15-year-old female" whom the victim knew because they both lived in Covelo.
According to the MCSO, the 15-year-old "physically assaulted" the victim in the field, and detectives "developed probable cause which led them to believe Montelongo's death was related to the physical assault."
The 15-year-old, whose name has not been released due to her age, was arrested on April 15 and booked into Mendocino County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder.
The MCSO reports that it is still investigating the incident to "determine the circumstances of the physical assault and Montelongo's official cause of death," and that an autopsy on the teen has been scheduled for April 19.
The MCSO requests that "anyone with information that could assist Sheriff's Detectives in this investigation is urged to contact the Sheriff's Office Tip-Line by calling 707-234-2100, or the WeTip anonymous crime reporting hotline by calling 800-782-7463."
