Laytonville now has a satellite branch of the Mendocino County Library that opened on March 25 with 10 to 15 volunteers and one part-time employee.
The library is conveniently located in the parking lot with Fosters Ranch Market off Highway 101 and Branscomb Road at 44960 N. Hwy. 101, Suite D., Laytonville, CA 95454.
Allison Wild, the sole branch employee, trained at the Willits branch for two-and-a-half months before taking the position in Laytonville.
"All the books are brand new in the library" and are required to have a volunteer when open. With elementary kids coming in every other week "volunteers are welcome and needed," Wild said. Part of the shared book program between three counties, if they don't have the book you are looking for they will be able to get it.
Funding for the library has been collected for nearly a decade by Friends of The Laytonville Library. The county of Mendocino teamed up with friends of the library to apply through the USDA Community Facility Direct Loan & Grant program, in which a grant was approved. The grant is a federal grant for rural areas to increase literacy.
The library also received a grant to install fiber optic internet from the Fiber Corporation for Education Network Initiative in California through the California State Library.
Funding for the library will continue through the budget of the Mendocino County Library. The shared budget will be calculated depending on how many people use the library, how many library cards are issued and how often it is used.
The library is open Wednesdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Thursdays and Saturdays 1 to 6 p.m., with volunteers welcome to come help. More information can be found online at https://www.mendolibrary.org/ or by telephone at 707-234-6390.
