The Pioneer High School varsity baseball team is hot on the heels of crosstown rivals Woodland High School for potentially a second consecutive Golden Empire League title.
While it took the offense a few weeks to really get it going, the pitching staff has collectively been lights out since the start of the year. One key player who deserves his fair share of credit for that pitching dominance is senior pitcher Carson Timothy.
While Matias Michel and Drew Van Court make up an overqualified 1B and 1C in the rotation, Timothy, a UC Santa Barbra commit, is the unquestioned number one starter.
"When you have a guy that really takes pride in his craft, you like to see the work pay off," said Patriots head coach Craig Marquez. "He is such a true competitor. The whole team feels confident in the game when he is out there. The work he puts in is second to none, and with his attitude and being a great kid and with how he is, it's hard not to root for him."
After a junior season that culminated with offers from D1 baseball programs, Timothy has upped his game at the plate and with his arm in his final high school season.
According to MaxPreps, Timothy has a 4-1 record in six starts with three complete games. In those starts, he has a microscopic 0.23 ERA in 31 innings pitched, striking out 60 batters and only walking four. He has also only allowed one earned run in that time.
"His velocity is up this year and he also put some weight on," Marquez said. "He spent time in the offseason taking care of his arm, and all those little things you don't see that he does on the field make him the pitcher he is today. It's fun watching him get all the rewards in game situations for his work."
Timothy has been just as good at the plate with a .381 batting average, 16 runs, 16 hits, a home run and seven RBI.
On April 18, Timothy kicked off the week with a 10-0 win and dominant performance over Dixon High School. In a six-inning complete game, due to the 10-run mercy rule, Timothy racked up 12 strikeouts while only allowing three baserunners via a walk and two hits.
"I'm more confident in my pitches this year," Timothy said. "I attack the hitters no matter who is in the box. I'm pretty locked in when I get on the mound, just trying to stay in the moment and keep my performance going."
At the plate, he scored two runs while picking up a hit.
Following a forfeit win over Mira Loma on Wednesday, Timothy and the Patriots continued their assault at the plate on Thursday with an 11-3 victory. Timothy picked up an RBI and scored two more runs. The next day, at home in the series finale, Timothy finished the week with another run and hit.
"I just want him to continue what he is doing for us and have fun," Marquez said. "A lot of times, seniors don't see the end anytime soon, but I just want him to have some fun and enjoy what he is doing."
With just three league games left to play this season as of Wednesday morning, all scheduled for this week, the Patriots can only focus on themselves and hope the Wolves stumble late in the season to force either an outright league win or share of the title. After that, the Division 3 or 4 playoffs likely await both Woodland schools.
"I've been playing with these guys for a long time, so I'm just having fun this year," Timothy said. "Hopefully, we can make a push for the GEL title, but I'd like to win a section championship as well."
