Aracely Ruiz has for years shown "amazing dedication, support, and loyalty" for students at Woodland Community College.
Ruiz will be recognized along with former Yuba Community College District Trustee and now Yolo County Supervisor Gary Sandy, the Yolo County Farm Bureau; classified staff member Tracy Williams of Lake County, and alumni Edwin Ortega-Beltran at the Friday, April 28, event held in Building 800 of the Woodland College campus, 2300 E. Gibson Road.
The celebration gets underway at 4:30 p.m. and concludes at 6 p.m.
The fundraising event, sponsored by the college's Fund Committee, will benefit the new men's and women's Woodland College Soccer Program. Attendees will be served "heavy hors d'oeuvres," beer and wine, as well as a silent auction.
For years, Ruiz has "extended a warm hand" to students and always makes sure she is there for them," according to college student body senator Amna Ali. "I have never seen a counselor let alone its staff faculty member have the student's back as quickly as she had been there for me."
Ali recounted that she had been having trouble within a particular class "where the professor was not responding to my emails, and there was a lot of communication problems.
"I had my own circumstances and I needed to pass that class right away," Ali noted. "One day, I had met up with her talking about my current situation as how difficult the class had been because it had started late in the semester, and I really needed this class to pass in order to graduate … ."
Ali stated, "Right away, Aracely was there for all of the students and spoke on behalf (of) us, and talked to the dean about this problem right away.
"When I heard that, and finally the communication skills had been resolved, I was so incredibly happy to know the fact that I had someone at Woodland Community College and the fact that my counselor had my back and was supporting me and other students.
"We all have our own circumstances and stories that shape us, who we are, and all of us are truly trying our best to make the best of our lives and college is the setting," Ali stated. "Yet the fact that I am able to move forward and still be on track to graduation and transfer (could not have) been done without the backing and help of Aracely Ruiz."
Ali said Ruiz is a truly exemplary person "who has the characteristics of dedication, hard work, determination and being the voice of students."
