Teacher, students use grant for a 'Healthier Dixon'
In February, Dixon High School English teacher Lisa Krebs applied for — and received — a Tobacco Use Prevention Education grant through the Solano County Office of Education for an anti-vaping and anti-smoking project to create and carry-out with her 10th grade Honors English students at Dixon High School.
Nearly 80 students participated in the project, called "Healthier Dixon."
Krebs says they started out with an idea to help make Dixon High School and the Dixon Community a healthier place by educating Dixon High students about the dangers of smoking and vaping.
In small groups, students brainstormed different ways to address smoking and vaping problems on campus.
Says Krebs: "Ultimately, they decided to create a visual art installation with messages written on our hands that might influence our classmates NOT to smoke or vape. Students created their own messages and wrote the messages on their hands. I photographed their hands and we printed nearly 80 messages on 8.5 x 11 paper to display around campus.
We have the art installation for student viewing in our school library, for teacher viewing near our staff lounge, and for community viewing in our front office. Feedback has been positive.
We wanted to do more, so we created outgoing messages for our morning announcements on 'Wellness Wednesdays.' Our wellness messages inform students about the physical and developmental dangers of smoking and vaping. Each message was researched and drafted by student groups.
The 'Healthier Dixon' project has empowered young people to influence classmates toward better health. Students remarked that the simple gesture of positive messaging can change a young person's outlook and behavior.
We thank the Solano County Office of Education for supporting our project. May Dixon continue to be healthier!"
Solano County youngster wins international Jewish competition for 5th consecutive year
In April of 2020, then 9-year-old Mendel Zaklos of Vacaville took first place in the international Chidon Sefer HaMitzvos competition for the second consecutive year — the first time such a feat was believed to have been accomplished. It made the papers.
The now 12-year-old son of Rabbi Chaim and Aidel Zaklos of Chabad of Solano County recently did it again; and is believed to be the first to win five of these annual competitions in a row, his proud father said.
The Chidon Sefer Mitzvot, which tests children's knowledge of the 613 commandments in the Torah, took place in New York, and included thousands of contestants from around the country and the world.
Mendel Zaklos won gold his first and second years competing; bronze the third year and gold last year and this year, his father said. The 2000 competition was held online due to Covid, while it is usually conducted in person in front of a live audience, as it was this year.
"An amazing amount of knowledge and information," is demonstrated by the young contestants, and this fifth and last win is "a badge of honor" that promises to help his son rise to prominence in "Jewish life," the elder Zaklos said.
