I just finished the March 2023 issue of American Rifleman.
My favorite article of this issue was I Have This Old Gun: US Army M1871 Rolling Block by Garry James. What an interesting firearm. The rotating breech block would be replaced by bolt actions in the 1890s, but it still marks an important turning point, where metallic cartridges were used for the first time.
I also liked The Oldest Gun in America: A Conquistador's Cannon Unearthed, by William P. Mapoles and Dr. Deni J. Seymour. I thought this article was neat, as it combines metallurgy, history, archeology and several other fields to make the case that a recently-found cannon is the oldest firearm discovered in the United States- Arizona in this case. It is believed that the cannon was owned by Coronado, and perhaps lost during some of the Pueblo revolts.
Thank you for reading my post.
