KELSEYVILLE — The 2023 season agrees with the Kelseyville High School tennis team so far. The Knights improved to 5-0 on Thursday afternoon by shutting out the Fort Bragg Timberwolves 5-0 in Coastal Mountain Conference action at Kelseyville.
"I was a little worried about the match simply because of the unknown," Kelseyville head coach Andy Dobusch said. "They (Timberwolves) have a couple of solid returning players that I thought might give us a tough time, but our kids showed up and took care of business."
Of the four contested matches — two in singles and two in doubles — Kelseyville won all of them in straight sets. Fort Bragg didn't have a player for third singles and had to forfeit that match.
In first singles, Rylan Lipscomb played his best match of the season, according to Dobusch, winning 6-2, 6-1 win over Damien Robber.
"Rylan is playing great tennis; a nice balance between solid defense, aggressive offense and strong serving," Dobusch said. "Rylan was the more consistent player and really stepped up his game in what could have been a challenging match."
Ryan Taylor blanked Wilberth Castaneda 6-0, 6-0 in second doubles.
"I'll say it again, he'll just beat you," Dobusch said. "Ryan gets everything back and hits deep ground strokes that cause a lot of problems for his opponents. It was a nice solid match for him."
Evan Weller was the beneficiary of Fort Bragg's forfeit at third singles.
In first doubles, Maddy Madrzyk and Olivia Hommer beat Bryson Fletter and Rebecca Valenzuela 6-1, 6-3.
"The second set was closer than I'd like to see," Dobusch said. "We're still making some unforced errors that need to get cleaned up, but when these girls are on, they're tough to beat."
Payton Morris teamed up with Maddy Borghesani for a 6-0, 6-0 win in second doubles.
"Wow, both of these players have improved so much since the start of the season," Dobusch said. " They played solid tennis today. They moved well and hit some really great shots."
Added Dobusch of his team's most recent win, "We have a young, deep team that's well positioned for success. It's great to see such enthusiasm and community support for this team. We had a packed house at the courts today. It's not just parents and students coming to the matches, the Kelseyville tennis community comes out and cheers us on as well. Kelseyville has a strong tennis tradition and I'm honored to be a part of it."
The Knights were home again Friday to play Mendocino. They hit the road Tuesday to play Cloverdale at 4 p.m.
