Dharma Realm Buddhist University (DRBU) is hosting a benefit concert, the Infinite Light Winter Recital, featuring some of the best musicians of the Ukiah area along with international young musicians' renditions of worldwide masterpieces.
The concert will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Mendocino College Center Theatre in Ukiah. Tickets, which are currently on sale to the public online at drbu.edu/winterconcert and in-person at Mendocino Book Company, are offered on a sliding-scale basis, and proceeds will benefit music education.
Special guest performers include professional artists Spencer Brewer, Elizabeth MacDougall, and Dr. Wenbo Yin.
Brewer, a resident of the area, is a world-recognized composer and pianist with 15 solo albums. He inspires audiences worldwide with his piano skills, and his music has been featured in movies and TV shows, including the Oprah Winfrey Show and the Olympic Games.
Elizabeth MacDougall, a Ukiah local, is one of the region's best and most prolific pianists. She plays in both the Ukiah Symphony and Lake County Symphony and is an instructor at Mendocino College.
Dr. Wenbo Yin is a saxophone player with a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and is a current student at Dharma Realm Buddhist University. He made his solo debut at Carnegie Hall in July 2022. All three guests will offer performances at the recital.
Celebrating interconnectedness and diversity in culture, the program will offer international genres of music, including jazz and classical pieces on saxophone, Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, traditional Chinese instruments, modern and classical dance, and originally composed choir songs. Alongside the special guests, international young musicians, many of whom have studied music from a young age, will perform as well.
"We are thrilled to be offering a recital to the local Ukiah community that features some of the best musicians in the area and also celebrates music education," said DRBU President Susan Rounds. "We welcome the local community to join us in what will surely be a wonderful and inspiring evening."
To keep everyone safe during the holiday season, face masks will be required and those feeling sick will be asked to stay home.
Get your tickets online at drbu.edu/winterconcert or at the Mendocino Book Company at 102 S. School St., Ukiah. Tickets are by donation, and proceeds will benefit music education at Dharma Realm Buddhist University and Instilling Goodness and Developing Virtue Girls School.
