After much discussion with our daughter late yesterday afternoon, it appears that our December plans are becoming more or less crystallized.
I mentioned very briefly in a recent post, that Lynn's mom had received news that cancer has returned, specifically in her liver. Her Doctor, also indicated it has shown up in other spots in her body as well. They are still doing a few more tests to confirm the spots or images on MRI scans are indeed cancer.
Nevertheless, it is certain in her liver. So...not good.
She knows that it can't be cured and that they are playing a game of slowing it down as best they can.
Seeing as she is pushing 80, and given her diagnosis chances are that this may very well be Lynn's mom's last Christmas.
Given that, it looks like Lynn, our daughter, and her partner(Andrew) will fly back to Ontario on December 15 or 16. Our daughter and Andrew will stay that weekend and fly back to Nova Scotia on Monday(December 19).
I will stay in Nova Scotia until just before Christmas. We have some major construction/upgrade scheduled on our house in the second week of December, and if it is not done now will have to wait until the spring at least. My plan is to fly out on the 23rd and return back to Nova Scotia on December 27th.
Lynn doesn't have a specific time in mind to return back to Nova Scotia yet. She may come back with me or she may stay a bit longer.
Ideally, it would have been wonderful if the three of us could have been there over the few days at Christmas. A big yet minor wrinkle is our daughter's restaurant in downtown Halifax has been fully booked prior to and after Christmas for the World Junior Hockey Tournament. It would be a challenge for her not to be there at that time.
So, this appears to be the solution that fits the best.
It would be a bit of an understatement to say that it has been a challenge getting into the Christmas spirit this year. Lynn and I are both saddened by the circumstances for sure, but we're trying to make the best of a terrible situation.
We had hoped to spend our first Christmas since moving into our new home, but.....in life, some things are just far more important......like family.
On a positive note, Lynn and I are taking this upcoming weekend for ourselves and heading to Halifax on Saturday to Christmas shop and enjoy the "Evergreen Festival" that occurs along the waterfront area. Lights; nighttime Christmas markets; music; food and such will be a welcome distraction. In addition, there is a spectacular light display on the facade of Halifax City Hall,, and the "Halifax Public Gardens"(think a Victorian area garden) is also decked out in lights and such.
Our daughter(and potentially Andrew) at this stage plan to join us for the evening, so that will be lovely.
We're staying overnight downtown and plan to go to Wolfville in the Annapolis Valley on Sunday.
So, not what we had hoped our first Christmas in Nova Scotia would be like, but it will be with family and realistically....it doesn't get any better than that.
