Yesterday, we headed off to Halifax(a couple of hours away) to Christmas shop and as well as to spend time with our daughter and her man(Andrew) on Saturday night.
Sparing you the details of the shopping excursion(somewhat successful) - we met up with our daughter, Andrew, and their husky Roo around 6:30pm and headed off the the "Evergreen Christmas Festival" located along the Halifax waterfront.
Lynn and I have been to several outdoor Christmas markets(both daytime and nighttime) in the past, and I do think that they are becoming more popular for a couple of reasons.
In no particular order of importance, they're just plain fun to attend.
If they're planned correctly, there tends to be something that appeals to all age groups(mostly thinking - is there something for kids?). They can make for a unique experience when they try to emulate the older European outdoor Christmas Market feel. Especially if there is a bit of snow on the ground.
COVID in some aspects may have forced places to move indoor events to the outdoors. Not sure this is a strong reason, but I could see it playing somewhere in the mix of things.
Based on other outdoor markets we've been to - both of us attended expected to see more vendors in the market area that would be selling more than wine, locally distilled spirits, and pastries.
Our expectations for the market certainly did not match the reality of the situation.
Not unexpectedly, the spot on the waterfront as part of the festival that was doing a brisk business - was the beer garden. Christmas lights, propane heaters, seating, and beer appear to attract folks like bees to honey.
So, for us in a way, the outdoor market and the waterfront experience were a bit underwhelming.
After wandering around for a few more minutes, we decided to head out for dinner someplace downtown. Andrew left to take to dog back home, so our daughter, Lynn, and I hiked uphill(yes everything goes UPHILL from the waterfront in downtown Halifax) to search out a spot to eat(it was busy as it should be for a Saturday night in a major downtown area).
We did stop to view the light display that is projected onto the facade of Halifax City Hall. I must admit that was pretty neat.
We found a spot(The Auction House) downtown, went in got drinks, and waited for Andrew to get back.
So, all in all, it was a wonderful evening, despite the slight failure of the festival on the waterfront. Our plan is to connect with our daughter later this morning for coffee, before heading out to Wolfville in the afternoon.
How was your Saturday?
