OAKLAND — A 20-11 third quarter propelled the Kelseyville High School varsity boys basketball team to a 63-46 non-league victory over Castlemont High School on Wednesday night in Oakland, the first win of the season for head coach Oscar Lopez and the Knights.
"We were sloppy to end the first half," Lopez said of Kelseyville's eight-point second quarter that left the Knights with a 25-21 halftime lead. "We got sharper, got dialed in in the third quarter."
Manny Acosta scored eight of his 15 points in the third period as the Knights (1-1) pushed their lead to 45-31 by quarter's end. Acosta was one of three Kelseyville players to score in double figures, joining Luke Watkins (19 points) and Adolfo Arias (12 points).
"Luke is starting to come alive," Lopez said. "He rebounded and shot the ball well. Luke cleaned up the boards very well."
Acosta, who hit three 3-pointers, and Arias gave Kelseyville a triple-pronged attack against Castlemont.
"They're an athletic group, scrappy and they just don't quit," Lopez said of the Castlemont players. "It was a good test for us. It feels good to get that one (first win)."
Kelseyville's junior varsity team made its season debut and beat Castlemont 47-42 behind 16 points from Gene Holdenried and 13 from Ryder Leary. The JV Knights participate in the Fortuna Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Both Kelseyville teams open their North Central League I schedule on the road Tuesday against Roseland University Prep in Santa Rosa.
