Of the scores of things that happen as regularly as clockwork during the Christmas and holiday season.....and ranking right up there is Christmas and holiday movies and TV shows/specials.
In our household, we certainly have our favourite Christmas movies, as I'm sure many of you do as well. The older movies from back in the 1940s and 1950s are ones that will make an appearance at least once and often two or three times over the next month. The 1946 "Miracle of 34th Street"; the 1951 classic "A Christmas Carol(Scrooge)" and the 1954 musical "White Christmas."
We also enjoy a host of newer films, including "Elf";"A Christmas Story" and of course...."National Lampoons Christmas Vacation."
Moving right along, last night Lynn and I watched what I thought might be a "Hallmark" type Christmas movie called, "Christmas at Mistletoe Farm" on Netflix. A 2022 flick out of Great Britain.
Although not a "Hallmark" style movie in one sense, it did have the story thread of.....widowed man with five kids who works too much; needs to make a big presentation on Christmas Eve(or all lose their jobs); inherits an old farm; moves to the farm to finish the presentation in quiet; he has no Christmas spirit; children and village folk rally around him; he finds Christmas spirit and love at the end; all is as it should be.
Is it any good?
You'll either like it.....or wonder if you can ever get those wasted 90 minutes back.
The characters are over the top(but they all have loveable qualities that make them enjoyable); the costumes are "colorful" and the plot is predictable.
The story is in no way steeped in much reality - perhaps other than the message it conveys.
There are far more important things in life than work and deadlines. That family, community, and those around us are the important things in life. And that no matter how "out there you might be" there is a community that loves you.
I doubt that this will ever be a Christmas movie classic, but it worked at the new "old homestead" last night.
