INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Cornerback Jason Verrett will not suit up today for the first time since the 2021 season opener, and the 49ers instead have delayed his return until after next week's bye.
Verrett is among seven players the 49ers' deactivated before their game against the Rams.
Wide receiver Jauan Jennings (hamstring) and defensive end Kemoko Turay (coach's decision) joined the quartet of players already ruled out Friday: wide receiver Deebo Samuel (hamstring), fullback Kyle Juszczyk (finger), defensive tackle Arik Armstead (foot, ankle) and linebacker Dre Greenlaw (calf).
Verrett, in his comeback attempt from last year's anterior cruciate ligament tear, did come off the physically-unable-to-perform list Wednesday, after the 49ers maximized his three-week practice window. He missed a couple of practices amid that span because of soreness.
Surely tempting the 49ers to delay Verrett's debut are these factors: next week's bye, and SoFi Stadium's synthetic turf, the latter being a concern because there is a growing sentiment around the NFL that all fields should be natural grass to ease the impact and injury risk on players' bodies.
To replenish the receiving corps without Samuel and Jauan Jennings, the 49ers called up Willie Snead IV and Tay Martin from the practice squad Saturday, something they also did with defensive tackle T.Y. McGill
Out for the Rams are:
Running back Cam Akers
Quarterback Bryce Perkins
Cornerback Shaun Jolly
Wide receiver Lance McCutcheon
Tight end Kendall Blanton
Defensive tackle Bobby Brown
