One of the great benefits of having a homeschool network, is that they are such a rich resource. I would have never thought to look for homeschool events at the Biltmore Estate. As it turns out, every September they run an event called Biltmore Homeschool Days. Families travel far and wide for this event! How lucky for us that we just have to drive across town.
Apparently each year they have a different theme. Last year it was farming and kids were churning butter. This year, I think the theme in the morning was family history and in the afternoon it was party etiquette. So they had the kids make a family tree and design a family crest. They played the board game Ticket to Ride because of the Vanderbilt's roll in the railroads and then designed their own mansion using the Biltmore's blueprint.
Miles LOVED designing his mansion. We got so much mileage out of that for weeks after the event. We used it as dictated writing prompts in which I am Miles's scribe.
This type of journaling is new to us this year and he loves it. This is the second entry on the mansion. All about The Candy Room:
After lunch we had an etiquette lesson, tea party, and parlor games. Our group was about 90% boys and it really tickled me to see them all trying to drink their tea with their pinkies up as instructed. They were great.
We had a fantastic time with friends at this live history lesson and have had many discussions about Miles's future mansion since then. I, personally, can't wait to jump into his pool of cotton candy. Even if I won't eat the stuff!
